Extractions: Camogie has to be one of the most played sports by both young and not so young Irish girls. Based on the rules of hurling which is also an old Irish game for men, camogie can seem dangerous to a stranger but not to the girls who with a passion love this sport . Two teams of twelve girls, battle it out, with what look like sticks but which are called hurls. Chasing after a ball which is called a sliotar. The objective of the game is to bring the ball either on your hurl or dribbling on the ground towards your opponents goals and scoring. The goals are a little different than usual goals there a small version of rugby posts. A goal is scored when the sliotar goes between the goal post (just like a goal in hockey). A point is scored when the ball travels between the two vertical posts over the goal post. There are three points in every goal hence the point is much easier to score.

Extractions: From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search Camogie Irish camógaíocht ) is an Irish stick-and-ball team sport played by women; it is almost identical to the game of hurling played by men. Camogie is played by 100,000 women in Ireland and world wide, largely among Irish communities. Matches are contested by two teams of 15 a side, using a field 130m to 145m long and 80m to 90m wide. H-shape goals are used, a goal (scored when the ball goes between the posts and under the bar) is equal to three points and a point (scored when the ball goes over the bar) is equal to one point. It is organised by the Dublin-based Camogie Association or An Cumann Camógaíochta . The annual All Ireland Camogie Championship attracts attendances of up to 33,154 and is televised live, attracting a TV audience of over 300,000, or 7% of the Irish population. The rules are almost identical to hurling , with a few exceptions. Goalkeepers wear the same colours as outfield players. This is because no special rules apply to the goalkeeper and so there is no need for officials to differentiate between goalkeeper and outfielders. A camogie player can handpass a score (forbidden in hurling since 1980) Camogie games last 60 minutes (senior inter-county hurling games last 70) Dropping the camogie stick to handpass the ball is permitted.

The girls were coached by some of our own Senior team members, Rose Harrington, Maria Moran, Ciara O Connell, Aoife Kearney and Deirdre O Leary, as well as Tipperary Senior Camogie captain, Jill Horan. Luckily, the weather obliged over the course of the 3 days so we managed to stay outdoors. Great fun was had improving skills, practicing drills and playing games. On the final day of the camp we had some well well known GAA stars down to visit the girls. Everyone was delighted to meet Cork dual player Eoin Cadogan, Cork Footballers Nicholas Murphy and Colm O Neill, and Cork Camogie player Amanda O Regan. They all took time to chat to the girls, join in with shooting practice and other drills, and of course to pose for photos and sign autographs.
