Trellising Grape Vines trellising wine grapes Most wine drinkers never think about how the grapes that made their wine hang on the vine. http://www.avalonwine.com/trellising-the-grape.php
Extractions: get lots of sun Over the many generations of wine history around the world, a number of different trellis systems have been adopted as worthy methods of capturing sunlight. These trellising variations are based on the unique needs of different sites to manage factors such as weak or strong vine vigor, to best capture the sunlight at different exposures and latitudes, and even to make harvesting easier. Canopy Management macroclimate mesoclimate What few wine drinkers realize is that there is also a third kind of climate that influences the quality of the wine they drink: the microclimate that exists within the above-ground canopy of vine leaves and fruit out in the vineyard. The quality of the climate immediately surrounding each plant is very important in how the plant grows and matures its fruit, and in the final character of the wine that is produced. Trellising is also the most important tool in managing this canopy microclimate for the best fruit quality. Each different trellising system offers growers varying opportunities to influence the fruit quality through canopy management.

Extractions: Canopy trail provides up-close look at wildlife Features - January 16, 2001 By Yusran Endo Fauzi MT. HALIMUN, West Java (JP): The 100-meter-long canopy trail is suspended at a height of between 25 meters and 30 meters, a bridge suspended in the valley of wilderness that is Mt. Halimun National Park. If lucky, visitors will be able to glimpse a panther, or one of the primates to be found in the area. The bridge is secured to the branches of Rasamala trees ( Altingia exelsa ), which serve as support pillars at different points along the trail. There is a shelter at each branch, where visitors can rest and observe the flora and fauna below, as well as the Cikaniki River flowing through the valley. The forest valley is the habitat of four primate species the Javan gibbon ( Hylobates moloch ), grizzlied surili ( Presbytis comata ), Javan leaf monkey (

Cornell Science News Report of a field course in Costa Rica. http://www.news.cornell.edu/releases/April96/canopy.hrs.html
Extractions: ITHACA, N.Y. The ascent offered everything Cornell's climbing wall lacks: red-eyed tree frogs and in-your-face howler monkeys, monster-movie spiders and cartoon-colored toucans, pink bromeliads filled with water and animal life, and a toucan's eye view of the Costa Rican rain forest that "seemed like it went on forever." Safely back in Ithaca, the 12 students from BioES 400 (Canopy Biology and Canopy Access in the Neotropics) are glad they learned climbing fundamentals on indoor rock before heading up the Virola trees. "The only moment I've thought about my death came and went in the tree while taking measurements with strong winds swinging me in all directions," recalled Erin Lindquist, a junior in Cornell's College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (ALS). She was measuring relative humidity by twirling a sling psychrometer in the Cerro de la Muerte region of Costa Rica, where solid ground is already 10,000 feet above sea level and trees have nowhere to go but up. "I saw my life flash before me," Lindquist said. "My adrenaline was at its max."

Extractions: Research topics in this forest include mechanisms by which biological communities are maintained, developing methods to preserve genetic resources, and symbiotic relationships at the ecotone between forest and stream ecosystems. Furthermore, some meteorological monitoring and remote sensing study have been conducted, and CO ; flux and spectral image of forest canopy are observed at the monitoring towers in the forest since 1997 and 2007, respectively. This forest is also registered to a core-monitoring site for the Japan Long Term Ecological Research Network (JaLTER) and the 'Monitoring 1000' program of the Ministry of Environment. As for the core site of JaLTER, the main research theme of this forest is regarded as 'clarify the mechanism that maintain the biodiversity, and the function of the diversity for the ecosystem on the cool-temperate forest'. Successive variations in the diversity of beetles, tree biomass, amounts of litter fall and seeds have been monitored and reported to the database of Monitoring 1000. Research facilities: outdoor: Canopy gondola (30 m height, 41 m jib), Canopy towers (several structures and heights), CO2 flux monitoring tower (21 m height). indoor: the research lab; equipped with among others with gas chromatography, N/C analyzer, UV-VIS-NIR spectrophotometer, FT-NIR spectrometer and incubators for micro-biology study. others: dormitory (38 beds), forest museum, tree archives (50 ha).
Extractions: Some 70% of the visitors to Kakum Park are locals. And the walkway is obviously a major attraction. Nature lessons for the local children will never be the same again. Most of the school children who visit Kakum Park have parents of relatives who live off the land - some, no doubt, contributing to deforestation. Investing in the future The authorities hope that this new generation will take more care of the rain forest. And the first step to encouraging this is attracting the children's interest.
