A good description is a bike race mixed with steeplechase. In cyclocross, riders race laps around a short course that usually features some pavement, some dirt, some woods, some steep hills and for good measure, some obstacles thrown in that require riders to dismount, work their way through and then get back on and ride some more. The course is usually 2.5 to 3.5 km (which works out to somewhere between a mile or two for those of us metrically impaired), with a race lasting anywhere from 30 to 75 minutes. Maybe 80% of the course will be ridable, with the rest made of natural obstacles like creeks and fallen trees combined with man-made barriers like bales of straw and low fences. Cyclocross bikes are more like road bikes than mountain bikes, though they do usually have knobbier tires and cantilever brakes that help keep mud and leaves, etc., from getting clogged up in them.

Extractions: revised 12/05 Cyclocross Bicycle Photos A good cyclocross race sits somewhere between an anarchist convention and the Sea Biscuit/War Admiral match race - pulsing throngs waving banners and howling like vikings. With inclement weather weeding out the weak, the folks who seem to populate these races are truly the devoted. Yet, the mood is suprisingly low key and inviting. Reminds me of the early days (1984 - 87) of mountain bike racing, when you could at least start the race just behind Tom Ritchey and Gary Fisher. Sure it's crazy. But, would you rather spend the winter down at the local 24 Git-Fit Center wondering who's sweat you are lying on? The bicycles used for cyclocross racing have to strike the classic balance between strong and lightweight, and have to put up with more abuse through one season than most bikes see in a lifetime. They are purpose-built, but usually used for much more - trail riding, commuting, even touring. It's an all-around bicycle design that begs to be ridden.

Right now St. Louis Park, MN Red Barn is a race I've done well at in the past and I was looking forward to it. I mounted up some file treads for the race because I thought they would be great for the fast course. The night before I didn't get much sleep and my mid-week training didn't go well either so I should have known better. I got a great start and was sitting 4th wheel and feeling good when I went into a corner too hot and my front tire washed out and I went down and 10+ people passed me as I got back up. I hammered to try to make up some spots and about the 20min mark I felt like I was going backwards and digging a hole in my fitness. I decided to call it a day. Sunday was the Fridley race and it was going to be a long day because we were putting it on. I was there at 7:15am and setting up and doing registration. The race was a great success and many people told us that is was the best course all year. My teammates were awesome and helped all day and designed a super awesome course. We decided to only charge $20 for the race because $25-$30 entries are too much for a 60min cyclocross race. All our profits go back to the Fridley Middle School for letting us use the property and we were able to give them over $800, even at a $20 entry. I wasn't sure how I would feel on Sunday given my meltdown on Saturday, but I wanted the opportunity to race our course. Surprisingly I felt good and was able to race really well. The course was awesome and had plenty of hard stuff and fast sections and the hill on the back was great. I ended up getting into a group with Smithers and BK and Little Guy. I attacked on the hill in the last lap trying to get rid of Smithers and BK and put my head down and took it to the line and ended up pulling them to let them outsprint me.
