Extractions: Daito Ryu aikijutsu aikibudo jujutsu is a Japanese martial art that first rose to attention of the world under the headmastership of Sokaku Takeda . Takeda had an extensive training in several martial arts and referred to the style he taught as Daito Ryu but there is disagreement to the history of this art. He certainly received much of his combat training from his father Sokichi Takeda's many arts; however while most historians accredit Sokaku Takeda with martial arts genius by creating Daito Ryu many students do not agree, citing their soke's original position. Although he claimed it was a koryu bujutsu (ancient) art, there appears to be no documentation that predates him. He claimed all documentation was lost in a fire. Regardless of how old the style dates, it is generally agreed that it is closer in spirit to koryu than to modern or gendai arts. Daito Ryu is becoming more popular, but has largely been eclipsed by its offshoot aikido . Amongst its other relatives are Hakko Ryu . Daito Ryu of today is split up in some different organizations, such as Seigo Okamoto's Roppokai. This martial arts -related article is a stub . Takeda had extensive training in several martial arts (including Kashima Shinden Jikishinkage-ryū and sumo ) and referred to the style he taught as "Daitō-ryū" (literally, "Great Eastern School"). Although the school's traditions claim to extend back centuries in Japanese history there are no known extant records regarding the ryū before Takeda. Whether Takeda is regarded as either the restorer or the founder of the art, the known history of Daitō-ryū begins with him.

Fightclub - Daito Ryu Daito Ryu Aiki Ju Jutsu, Tokyo, Japan. Little is known about Daito Ryu Aiki Ju jutsu in the West. Even in Japan, it has long been considered a relic of a pre war era, at best the http://www.fightclub.com.au/daitoryu.htm
Extractions: Daito Ryu has always been a conservative and some what secretive martial art. Its most famous exponent Takeda Sokaku only ever taught people of high social standing such as politicians, teachers, police or military people. Before that the art belonged exclusively to the Aizu clan in Japan and was never allowed to be shown to outsiders. Takeda was probably one of the last true warriors. At the turn of the last century, he spent his time roaming Japan, taking on challengers and perfecting his sword and Ju Jutsu techniques against any one foolish enough to take him on. Although only 5ft tall he was feared and respected as a great Martial artist and continued to travel around Japan teaching and spreading Daito Ryu well into his 80s. Although very small and hard to find, Daito Ryu Aiki Ju Jutsu has remained remarkably intact, since Takeda Sokaku Sensei started disemminating the art through out Japan at the turn of the century. Periodically put on hold during the Second World War, the art in its original form is still very much alive in a small industrial suburb in the outskirts of Tokyo.

Extractions: Daito-ryu aikijujutsu is best known as the technical foundation of modern aikido. It is a Japanese system of self-defense handed down by Japanese warriors through the ages and perfected in the nineteenth century by martial arts master Takeda Sokaku (a descendant of the famous Takeda warrior family). Primarily it is an empty-handed fighting system featuring a wide variety of escapes, throws, pins, controls, and other self-defense techniques. Practice of Daito-ryu’s well organized curriculum of formal techniques allows the practitioner to systematically build a “toolbox” of useful self-defense skills. Distinctive among these is an ability to apply “ aiki ,” an ancient Japanese way of using subtle body movements to gain and maintain combative advantage when attacked. A brief history of Daito-ryu is available here The Daito-ryu aikijujutsu technical curriculum is based on a group of 118 techniques referred to as the Hiden Mokuroku (List of "Secret" Teachings). This curriculum is further divided into five subsets, each with its own emphasis and “flavor,” and taken together these teach the core techniques, principles, and tactics of Daito-ryu aikijujutsu. Daily practice takes the form of partnered forms ( kata ), with one person attacking and the other defending in a controlled manner. Particularly dangerous techniques have been revised to allow them to be practiced safely by students with varying degrees of ability and physical fitness (although their more destructive original versions are also shown to provide a frame of reference). Unlike modern martial arts (karate, kendo, judo, etc.) sparring is not included in the general training regimen, since the inherent danger of the techniques contraindicates their free application in competitive matches.
