Gallery Takeda Tokimune Soke writes the following about the genesis of Daito-ryu: Going back to the origins of Aiki, we arrive to the ancient Tegoi , told in an episode of the Kojiki, one of the oldest texts of Japan : Takemidauchi-no-kami throws Takeminakata-no-kami grabbing his hand with ease, like it was a cane. This Tegoi would be the origin of Sumo and was transmitted both in the legend "Nomi-no-Sukune" and "Taima-no-Kehaya" told in the Nihonshoki and in Sumai-no-Sechie at the court Heian age an in the samurai Sumo of the Kamaura age. The Sumai-no-Sechie was a fight in front of the Emperor made by wrestles of different origins from the whole country, but it was different from modern day Sumo: there was no ring and it was more oriented to the samurai arts coming from Tegoi. You can understand it also from the Imperial edit of Emperor Jinmei: the Sumai-no-Sechie is not a simple sport, it also includes methods to improve one's strength. A the times of Emperor Seiwa , in 868, the Sumai-no-Sechie that depended by the lead of Shiki-bu Minister was transferred under that of Hyo-bu Minister and was more and more characterized by the samurai arts. He was inspired by Okabayashi Shogen Sensei and was greatly honored by Okabayashi Sensei's permission to establish the first study group of Daito ryu aiki jujutsu Hakuho Kai in Canada. Shortly after Okabayashi Shogen Sensei gave the Koryukan the great honor of being the first Hakuho Ryu branch dojo in Canada. Mr. Darwish was appointed to be his first representative in Canada. Currently, Koryukan is an independant dojo with a goal to practice and preserve the traditional Daito ryu aiki budo techniques and Ono ha itto ryu kenjutsu as they were taught to us. Extractions: Roy Goldberg Sensei Goldberg (Shingen) Sensei is the East Coast Representative of the North American Daito Ryu Aiki Jujutsu Kodo Kai (NADRAKK). Sensei is the highest-ranking student of Hawayo Kiyama Shihan - The President and Chief Instructor of NADRAKK. Goldberg Sensei, trained in Miyama Ryu JuJitsu under its originator Shinan A. Pereira for eleven years. Miyama Ryu is an eclectic system of JuJitsu based on Takenouchi Ryu, Sosuishitsu Ryu, Judo and Aikido. Goldberg Sensei has studied Aikido at the United States Federation Headquarters under the direction of Yamada Shihan and his senior students. He was also fortunate to take classes with other leading Aikido and JuJutsu instructors to include Osawa, head instructor of the Aikikai in Japan, Gozo Shioda, Morihiro Saito, and Kisshomaru Ueshiba as well as other direct students of O' Sensei. Goldberg Sensei was an instructor for the New York City Police Department (NYPD) Police Club, where he worked with NYPD Emergency Services Unit (ESU). He conducted quarterly seminars for U.S. Special Forces, to include U.S.M.C. Force Recon, and U.S. Navy SEALS. In addition, Goldberg Sensei trained and instructed the Head of Security for the 56th Secretary of State. He currently trains Federal Law Enforcement Agents from various agencies consisting of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Goldberg Sensei was given the name of Shingen by the Menkyo Kaiden when he was given his Hiden Mokuroku. In the last few years he has received the Hiden Okugi Mokuroku. He is honored to train at the Hombu Dojo in Kitami, Japan for the past 20 years. He has trained with the leading Daito Ryu Shihans in Japan including Yusuke Inoue Menkyo Kaiden, Headmaster of Kodo Kai.
