He was strongly influenced by his instructors at the Stockton Escrima Academy in California, including Grandmaster Angel Cabales, Max Sarmiento, Dentoy Revilar and Master Leo Giron, as well as the teachings of his own father. Latosa has received full instructorship certification in the Serrada system and Cadena de Mano. He is the only person ever to be certified in Cadena de Mano by Max Sarmiento. Latosa went on to serve in the U.S. Air Force which brought him to many different places around the world. During his travels, he has taught Escrima to SWAT teams and elite military units. Latosa is credited with helping to introduce Filipino martial arts to England and Europe. Presently, there are thousands of students practicing Latosa Escrima in Europe alone. Escrima Escrima, the Spanish word for "fencing," is the name given to both armed and unarmed applications of the Filipino martial arts. In learning a battlefield art which only recently developed into a sport, the Escrima student begins with single or double weapons and gradually learns to apply the same techniques empty-handed. A deadly serious approach to fighting, Escrima is known for lighting fast self-defense and simultaneous counter-attacks and blocks.

Escrima is a art form that challenges you to think outside of the box. The martial art of Escrima has its origins in the Philippine Islands. The art is beautiful to watch as it is effective and deadly. The first recorded episode of the arts existence was dated around the 1520’s when Ferdinand Magellan and his men did battle with Chief Lapu Lapu and his tribe. The Filipino marital art of Escrima is distinct and unique because of how the art is taught. Escrima defies all normal martial arts training routines where normally the student learns the concepts and techniques of empty hand first, then advances on to weapons. In Escrima, the teaching progression is the opposite, the student learns the concepts, strategy, techniques of the weapon first then concurrently transitions into the empty hand. This is an important aspect of training because it actually familiarize the student to some of the real perils of the street such as knowing the potential dangers of a weapon, and being able to reacting in a rationale manner. The main tool used in teaching this unique Filipino martial art is a 24-26 inch rattan stick. In the art of Escrima, the stick is a representation of weapons (anything that can be held in your hand - knives, palm sticks, bottles, etc.) that a student learns to be familiar with using and avoiding. Once a student learns the concepts of Escrima, a student gains respect for a weapon whether using or avoiding the weapon in a serious situation. Escrima builds self-confidence through awareness of simple and practical concepts of essential survival skills. Learning these concepts can turn something as simple as a comb, keys or even a hairbrush into a lifesaving tool. The art is far more then students hitting each other with sticks.

Examining the history of the Philippines as a nation, it is clear that martial arts have always been an essential part of the Filipino society. Many different cultures and migrants influenced the martial arts of the Philippines, like in many other places. Settled in about 200 B.C by the Malays, in a first wave of migrations from the Southeast, they brought with them the weapon of the long knife. Although many weapons of different shapes and sizes were brought into the Philippines, the "Kris", a wavy bladed knife from the island of Java, was the first foreign weapon to be transplanted into the Filipino fighting arts. During the two more migrations that followed, these people were actually the ancestors of the present day Muslim-Filipinos of Mindanao and Sulu. In 1518, Ferdinand Magellan convinced King Charles I of Spain that the Moluccas, then known as the Spice Islands, could be reached by sailing west. Magellan told the king that the Moluccas belonged to the Spanish side of the demarcation line drawn according to the Treaty of Torsedillas. The king agreed to send an expedition to the Spice Islands under the command of Ferdinand Magellan. On September 20, 1519, the expedition sailed southward across the Atlantic Ocean. Magellan reached the southernmost tip of South America, where he crossed the Pacific Ocean strait, otherwise now known as the Magellan strait. On March of 1521, he finally reached the Marianas. After resting, his men and obtaining provisions, Magellan continued his voyage and, on March 17th, 1521, sighted the mountains of Samar, marking their arrival in the Philippine Archipelago.
