Handcycling was approved as part of the IPC Cycling Program in 1998 and was included at the World Cycling Championships for the Disabled that same year. In 2004, the IPC included a race for handcycles (men only) at the Paralympic Games in Athens Greece for the first time. Although handcycle racing is still relatively new, it has become very popular worldwide and athletes in the U.S., Europe, and Australia compete in respective national race series. Although handcycling is popular with the racing crowd, most handcycles are purchased by recreational athletes. In contrast to racing wheelchairs, handcycles are easily adjusted, simple to operate, and very easy to transfer in and out of. As a result, thousands of people with and without disabilities are handcycling to improve cardiovascular and aerobic health, increase upper body strength, ride with friends and family, and improve overall fitness.

Handgrip Styles Testimonial from Carlos Moleda, 4 time Hawaii IronMan Triathlon World Champion, Handcycle Division, (current world record holder 10:30:00): "This bike is the most comfortable bike I've personally ever ridden. The radical, luge-style seating is not for the faint of heart but is fast, stable and truly aerodynamic. I can ride about 2 mph faster against the wind on this bike than on previous semi-recumbent style bikes. Overall, this bike scores high points because it will allow those who can't ride a kneeling bike to go faster and be more competitive in a racing environment." Testimonial from Matt Updike, member of 2008 USA Paralympic Team: "Top End has come up with a great new design. The new frame construction allows you to sit lower and thus it's more aerodynamic. It's also super stiff so there's little wasted energy with the frame flexing. Combine that with some other new features like the new improved handles, cranks and footrests, it's not only fast, but it's also one slick looking ride." Retail: $6250.00
Extractions: EHC 2010 overall ranking is online . Many thanks to all the athletes from around the world for participating at the 2010 European Handbike Circuit and congratulation to all the winners. The EHF Committee is looking forward to seeing you again next year on the circuit. The 2011 EHC calendar will be online in November. Over the weekend of 4th and 5th September 2010 Kent hosted the first P1 status Road Race event ever to be held in the UK at Fowlmead County Park, near Deal. A strong field of athletes from Europe and the USA, including current World and Paralympic Champions, took part in a series of Road Races on the Saturday and Time Trials on the Sunday. The meeting was sanctioned as a P1 event by the UCI and included the British Para-cycling Time Trial Championship as well as the 2010 UK stage of the EHC race series. During the weekend the weather was generally fine, but there was a consistent breeze, which made racing conditions very challenging for all competitors. The principal race organisers from Kent County Council (Kent Sport, Leisure and Olympics) worked in partnership with Eurotunnel, Fowlmead Country Park, British Cycling, Handcycling

Handcycling Wheelchair Sports Federation is a national nonprofit that provides opportunities for the disabled and wheelchair-bound adults and youth to play adaptive sports recreationally and http://wheelchairsportsfederation.org/adaptive-sports/handcycling
Extractions: Many manufacturers have designed and released hand-powered recumbent trikes, or handcycles. Handcycles are a regular sight at HPV meets and are beginning to be seen on the streets. These usually follow a delta design with front wheels driven by standard derailleur gearing powered by hand cranks. Brake levers are usually mounted on the hand holds, which are usually set with no offset rather than the 180° of pedal cranks. The entire crank assembly and the front wheel turn together, allowing the rider to steer and crank simultaneously. Lean steer handcycles are another type of handcycle. In this type of handcycle the rider leans into the turn to steer. There is a longer learning curve with lean steer handcycles, and they are significantly less stable at high speed. The lean steer system feels similar to mono skiing, using your whole body to steer the handcycle. Lean steer handcycles can work well for lower-level injuries, although some athletes with high-level disability use them.
