Jousting - Definition jousting is a competition between two knights on horseback, wherein each knight tries to knock the other off his mount. jousting was at the peak of its popularity in the 14th to 16th http://www.wordiq.com/definition/Jousting
Extractions: Jousting scene, by Jörg Breu the Elder , pen and black ink over black chalk) Jousting is a competition between two knights on horse -back, wherein each knight tries to knock the other off his mount. Jousting was at the peak of its popularity in the to centuries. The knights were each equipped with three weapons; a lance , a one handed sword , and a rondel . When one knight knocked the other off of his mount, he was declared the winner of the round. If both knights were knocked off their mounts at the same time, it was considered a tie; they would then engage in sword combat, and the last standing was victorious. The knights usually jousted in a best out of three situation. Modern-day jousting competitions feature riders on horseback attempting various feats of skill with a lance, performed at Renaissance fairs and other festivals. Examples include attempting to thread a lance through a ring, or striking a stationary target. In the ring version, the rings become smaller as the competition progresses; riders who fail to capture a ring are eliminated until a winner is determined. This version of jousting is the official state individual sport of Maryland In the Italian town of Arezzo there is an annual jousting tournament that dates back to the crusades of the middle ages. Jousters wear colors representing different areas of the town and strike at a square target attached to a wooden effigy of a Saracen king. The other arm of the King holds a cat-o-three-tails three leather laces with a heavy wooden ball at the end of each. The riders strike the target with a chalk-tipped lance and score points for accuracy, but must also dodge the cat-o-three-tails after they have struck the target

Jousting jousting. jousting evolved from the early medieval tournament into a public spectacle that allowed the knight to show off his power, prestige and prowess. http://www.swords.co.nz/fjousting.html
Extractions: Jousting evolved from the early medieval tournament into a public spectacle that allowed the knight to show off his power, prestige and prowess. In the 10th and 11th centuries, the tournament was purely to train for war, and was run as a small scale campaign, often encompassing large tracts of land including plains, forests and even villages. The weapons and armour were real; death and injury were common, and captured knights might have to ransom themselves to be freed. As knighthood became as much a social class as a military one over time, with legal and commercial aspects as well as the military ones, tournaments evolved too. In the 14th and 15th centuries, tournaments were a way to entertain and impress the masses. Knights were suffering defeats on the battlefield at the hands of disciplined peasants and mercenaries, but at tournaments they reigned supreme. All who could afford entry could watch, but no commoners could take part. Melees were as much for spectacle now as for war training, and other events such as sword or poleaxe combats were included, but the joust was the centrepiece. It was a chance for individual knights to compete one-on-one, and be seen by their peers. The early 15th century also saw great changes in the practise of jousting, with the introduction of the tiltline and specialised armour to reduce the dangers. As the role of the knight in warfare reduced after the 15th century, the tournament devolved into pure show, a chance to show off ones riding skills, and the element of risk removed as much as possible. The tournament only survived as a shadow of its former self until the 19th century and the Romantic Revival. Nobles built mock castles, adopted medieval pageantry and even jousted again on occasion. Tournaments happened sporadically until about 1980, when jousting evolved into a modern sport and public spectacle again.

Extractions: Tournament 5 Armed and mounted fighting men of nobility and valor, whose ranks were often hereditary and were called 'knights', first appear in Europe in the early 14th century. Such warriors were designated by other terms in earlier centuries. Militant monastic orders of knights first arose during the Crusades. Armor first consisted of chain mail and a one piece helmet and shield that were supplanted by full plate armor in the 14th century. The cost of armor, horse and squire mandated that knights would be drawn from the wealthy class, usually lower nobility at the least. The skill and tactics of massed pikemen and bowmen greatly reduced the impact of charging knights on horseback during several great battles of the Hundred Years War. Knights wearing full plate armor were relegated to jousting in the 15th century and we can therefore date the period of these tournament prints. Tournaments predate jousting. They were military exercises carried out to demonstrate prowess, documented in Europe by the 11th century. From the time of Richard I onward, English kings controlled tournaments by license. A successful knight could become fabulously rich participating in tournaments and could earn up to one million ducats each year. Losers paid the victors a sum equal to the ransom price in real war. In addition, if you unhorsed a knight you kept his armor and horse.

Mounted Combat: The Rider Mounted swordsmanship instruction and equipment. http://www.classicalfencing.com/mcrider.php
Extractions: HOME "Men often fail to score a hit for lack of sight, poor control of their lances or horses, or lack of determination." Duarte, King of Portugal, c. 1434 Just as the requirements of combat put unique demands upon the cavalry mount, so too are there special requirements placed upon the rider. It hardly seems necessary to say that the demands of combat, even simulated, require the rider to be physically fit and particularly limber. Keep in mind that cavalry training is not a pleasure ride. The normal hazards of even light equestrian work are magnified by the dangers of combat. These dangers apply not only to the rider but to his horse as well. The rider must understand these risks and assume the responsibility of knowing his or her limits and work diligently to stay in shape. Helmets should be worn at all times and pads for elbows and knees are often a good idea, especially during "Melee" training. As always, seek the advice of your personal physician before starting any new exercise regimen. This guide is not meant to be a primer for basic riding instruction. There are a number of books available to that end, and many are supplemented by helpful videos.

Extractions: Sharp scissors This variation on the tubular peyote technique creates a beaded bezel that will not only hold a cabochon securely but also will add beauty to whatever type of cab you choose: stone, glass or porcelain. The piece can then be embellished with fringe or accent beads and turned into a pin or necklace. Or as an alternative, you can apply the cabochon directly to a leather pouch or jacket, choosing colors that will highlight your central piece. To make this piece, knowledge of the tubular peyote technique is necessary. STEP 1.
