Sit-on-top kayaks are provided for all players. Intro to Kayak Polo sessions will be held each Sunday at 12:00 p.m. During these sessions, you'll be taught the rules of kayak polo, along with some basic paddling skills. You'll then have some time to practice paddling, and then have a game of kayak polo. You don't need to have any kayaking experience to participate (in fact, most people who participate in these sessions will have absolutely no kayaking experience). A full schedule of games is offered that range from mellow, no-tackle games, to a more competitive, aggressive style of play. Regardless of your style of play, we work hard to keep all of the games fun. As your skills progress throughout the summer, you'll have the option of taking lessons to learn the skills necessary to play kayak polo in a whitewater kayak. If you choose to move from the sit-on-top kayaks into the whitewater kayaks, classes will be offered to teach you important self-rescue techniques such as the wet-exit, T-Rescue and the Eskimo roll. One of the problems Team Leader Howie has, is never really being sure about who will actually play at a given event for us since we don’t have a club base to draw the team from. All the members live quite far apart and rely on training (if they do any) in their local clubs, but given the squad member’s other commitment elsewhere, and the various injuries, planning can be quite a problem, and like every other team people do change their minds near the time of an event to say they wont go. Personally, despite not being fighting fit right my own injuries, I would prefer to play at the highest level, but that’s not the case for all the members of the squad. Everyone has their own thoughts on that and there’s no problem with that. The other problem, is that even if we know who we will have, the quality of 2

Internationally the sport is organized by the Canoe Polo committee of the International Canoe Federation , as one of the disciplines of the sport of canoeing. In 2005 Canoe Polo was contested at the World Games in Duisburg Germany under the patronage of the International Olympic Committee Practising on the River Cam The game is often described as a combination of water polo basketball and kayaking . The tactics and playing of the game are not unlike basketball or water polo but with the added complexity of the boats, which can be used to shield the ball. Some of the world's best players have come from Australia, with three time World champion gold medalists Duncan Cochrane, Brett Houghton and Keith McChlery all playing in the successive 1994, 1996 and 1998 Australian mens team.

These games occur once a week on Tuesdays at 5:45 PM meeting at the Waterfront Activities Center (WAC) on Lake Washington . It is a great opportunity to bring together all club kayakers. Non-UKC members are also encouraged to come on and play, but you must provide all of your own kayaking gear. Beginning paddlers are especially encouraged to try kayak polo because it is a great way to meet other club kayakers, make contact with trip coordinators, and work on paddling skills while having a lot of fun. So, watch for kayak polo announcements and come on down to have a great time. How to Play The game involves lots of teamwork because you cannot paddle while holding onto the ball and you can only hold the ball for more than five seconds. While one team is passing the ball and trying to score, the other team defends their goal and tries to gain possession of the ball. A list of rules follows if you want to know more about the specific regulations.
