Extractions: Our intro sessions are designed for polo novices. If you already have some paddling skills we'll teach you the rules of the game, ball-handling technique, and give you a chance to get accustomed to our specialized boats. If you've never been in a kayak before we'll teach you how to fit the boat and gear correctly, how to wet exit, some basic paddle strokes, help you get comfortable with paddling and then begin to integrate polo-specific skills at an appropriate pace. Many of our members have taught kayaking skills and polo for many years and we often have close to a 1:1 student to teacher ratio at intro sessions, so we can accommodate a wide range of ability levels and learning curves.

Help make our newsletter more dynamic through your contributions. We have now modified our photo gallery to include trip reports, still photos and slideshows. Members are encouraged to submit their trip reports for the website AND the newsletter, as well as sending trip photos that you want to share on CDs so that they can be added to the website. We feel that these modifications will generate more interest among current members toward participation in our trips and also attract new members who might enjoy sharing these great adventures with us. Powerboaters on the Lower Mountain Fork and Little Rivers in McCurtain County, Oklahoma have been harassing canoeists and kayakers by aggressive behavior that threatens to swamp and flip unpowered boats below the US 70 Bridge on the LMF and on the Little River between the LMF confluence and the Arkansas state line. For now, and until such time as law enforcement begins to enforce existing federal and state laws protecting unpowered boaters, DDRC will limit club activities on those rivers to the area between Re-Regulation Dam and the US 70 Bridge. The Upper Mountain Fork River is NOT a part of this issue and will not be affected.

This sport, also known as Canoe Polo overseas, is an official international sport that is a cross between water polo, basketball, and hockey. Two teams of five players paddle kayaks and pass a water polo ball using their hands and paddle. The object of the game is to throw the ball into the goal of the opposing team. Players cannot paddle while holding onto the ball. They can only hold the ball for five seconds before they must pass or dribble. While one team passes the ball and tries to score, the other team defends their goal and tries to gain possession of the ball. If a player has the ball, it is legal to push them over! There are special kayaks designed for the sport, which most regular players own. The club also has it's own gear to loan to new players. You can also play in most whitewater kayaks. Safety equipment includes a life jacket and helmet with face mask. The game looks fast and furious but it is generally safe. Whether it be whitewater, sea kayaking, touring, kayak polo, down river, you name it, we support it. Kayak Polo is a fun, energetic game. We play in specialized boats built for a combination of speed and maneuverability, as well as body protection. The game is like water polo, basketball or hockey, except it's played in kayaks. In Los Angeles, you can play kayak polo either by joining the UCLA alumni association (sorry USC grads!) and playing at UCLA, or joining us at one of our casual games either at Mother's Beach in Marina Del Rey, or at Hansen Dam. See our calendar for events. Whitewater is scarce in Los Angeles itself, however, there are local rivers that run in the spring run-off such as the Piru and Arroyo Seco. Most of our boating is done further north in the State, starting at the Kern River. Slalom events are held each year in Southern California at the Kern River Festival, Miracle section on the Kern and the Rio Bravo section of the Kern. Other slaloms are held further north each year which some of our members attend. Sea Kayaking is very popular in Los Angeles with major trips to the islands off the coast of Southern California an attraction for the keen paddlers. Otherwise the coast is a great place to get a workout and enjoy the sun.

Kids Kayak Polo Austin Paddling Club TO HOST FREE KAYAK POLO PROGRAM FOR KIDS Spring/Summer 2008 program to take place Sunday afternoons April 11, 2008Austin, TX Austin Paddling Club's (APC’s) will host our third kids kayak polo program for kids age 12 - 16 this spring and summer. The program will include free use of club equipment and free instruction by local players who have competed on the US national team. Two players who started playing in this program in 2004 will be competing this year on the US Under 21 team at the 2008 world championships in Edmonton, Canada. Kayak polo is the perfect Austin summer sport; cool and wierd! Kayak polo is an official international sport best described as a mix between basketball and water polo. It's an exciting game played in ten-minute halves on a 35x23 meter court, with goals raised 6 feet above the water at each end. The object of the game is to use your hands or paddle to score the most goals against the opposing team. Each team consists of 5 players with a kayak, helmet with facemask, paddle and lifejacket. It's good exercise for both the body and mind, and a great sport for building strength, courage and teamwork.

It's wet, it's fun and a bit hard, but at the same time it is utterly impossible not to get carried away by the mood when the game is on. There are 6 competitors (3 against 3) so everyone can be a part of the game and be active. The instructor draws up a tournament so everyone has a chance to play each other. Kayak polo is played in sit-on-top kayaks, so it is easy to get in and out of them if you tumble over in the water. We have 4 lanes and as such we can have parties of up to 100 persons. With smaller events, we recommend the following: 1 lane for 1 hour; price: DKK 1700.00 for 6-10 persons
