I've been involved with martial arts for (8) eight years and have reached the level of 1st. Degree Black Belt. I began my martial arts study with the Choi Kwang Do (CKD)system here in Cartersville, Georgia. I had only planned on trying it for only a few months, but I became addicted to the training. As years went by, I thought that the best martial arts school was Choi Kwang Do. Granted, I went through many instructors, but I continued to love the art. My goal was only to become a Black Belt. One day, I went training and was told that the studio had closed. I was somewhat upset because the instructor at the time didn't give his students any reason for the closure. Wanting to continue my training, I decided to travel some twenty (20) miles to train at CKD Headquarters. This went on for about two weeks. I have had enough. There was no sense of direction for me until I went to see Master Roger Koo in January 1998. Master Koo, Founder of Koo Self Defense International (KSDI) invited me to train in his studio in Downtown Cartersville, Metro Atlanta, Georgia, USA. My first class at KSD, Master Koo paired me up with one of his yellow belt, Michael Roberson (NO PROBLEM, I THOUGHT). Yes, it was a huge problem. Michael almost took my arm off !!! Talk about feeling the awesome power of Koo Self Defense, I truly felt POWER that I have never felt in Choi Kwang Do especially for a very low ranking student. It's not just the yellow belts who has that kind of hitting power, ALL of his students do !!! I knew then that this was the new training center for me !!!

I am 40 years old. I started training with Master Koo at Koo Self Defense Institute in late January 1998. This is my only exposure to martial arts. I can say without reservation that Koo Self Defense works! Master Koo has had the courage to develop his own style of training and fighting based on sound principles of Human Anatomy, Physiology, and Kinesiology. His system is based on what works in the real world (the streets) and not the artificial world of the martial arts studio.

I really enjoyed the class training at Koo Self Defense, there were many different types of classes and drills. All of the training was done on focus mitts and shields using realistic movements. The hitting power of the all of the students was incredible, some of them only had been training for a few months. I earned my Black Belt in December 1996 and my 1st Degree Black Belt in April 1997. In August 2000, I went to Master Koo's school for two weeks of intensive training. The workout is even better than it was three years ago. Kick boxing aerobics and jump rope are now a part of the warm up and there are more focus mitt and shield drills. Master Koo has truly created a great program for self defense training and fitness. I really enjoyed the time I spent there and look forward to returning in the future. Commonly asked questions about Koo Self Defense training.

You will read how Koo Self Defense, a unique martial art training system developed by Master Roger Koo has changed my entire life. In November 1987, I was diagnosed with Hodgkins Disease (Cancer of the Lymphatic System). After several surgeries and radiation therapy, I went into remission only for a few months. I then had a recurrence of the disease. This required many more surgeries and fourteen months of intensive Chemotherapy. In April of 1990, at the age of 31, my doctor told me that I was in remission again. My road to recovery has not been easy. The amount of Chemotherapy I needed left my cardiovascular system stiff, tight and brittle. I gained a good bit of weight, and fatigue easily. Currently at age 39, I know it is time to make some permanent changes for a healthier lifestyle and to feel better. My flexibility in my body has become so stiff and tight that simple things such as tying my shoes and getting out of bed are a tiring task. Through research I had learned that martial arts training was an excellent way to achieve flexibility. This is when I contacted Master Koo, Founder of Koo Self Defense International in Downtown Cartersville,Metro Atlanta, Georgia, USA. I explained my medical history and what I wanted to achieve.

Kurt Zettlemoyer Koo Self Defense My black belt test experience at Koo Self Defense taken at the International Headqurters, Cartersville, Georgia, USA http://zettlemoyerksd.tripod.com/index.html

It was, to say the least, a memorable experience, and certainly the hardest I have ever pushed myself. The test began with a series striking and kicking drills that simulate a street attack. These were not the rehearsed and choreographed "step sparring" you see in most martial arts studios. These drills involve a moving attacker who can be chasing you, retreating, or charging. You must then perform a kick or strike to halt his motion, and counter attack with whatever strikes and kicks you can. These drills are very tiring and after this part of the test, I was already very tired, despite the vigorous aerobic and strength training I do. Next came focus mitt sparing. This exercise consists of 60 seconds of striking focus mitts with full power at full speed. It is similar to the "mad minute" that boxers perform on the heavy bag, except in this drill, your targets are moving around the gym, switch from head to body and back at random, and are encouraged to hit back! When the mitt sparing was over, it was time for shield sparring. Shield sparring is basically the same as mitt sparring except now you must kick as well as strike, and yes, the person holding the shields is still trying to hit you.

I began my training with Master Koo on January 4, 2002. I joined the no-belt program as I was not interested in the belt program because for street self defense purposes, one does not need a belt. In order to become a good fighter, the way a student is trained matters more. The way that all the students are trained, I can see how effective they will all be on the streets. They all generate so much hitting power, and it is unbelievable! My cousin, Jorge always encourages me to do my best at every class and I give more hat 100 per cent at every class. This habit of giving 100 percent also translates into everything that I do. I would go to Master Koo's studio with Jorge and he trains practically every day at least two and sometimes three classes a day. Sometimes the classes are so tough, especially the non stops 400 kicks, 1800 or 2520 non stop punching onto focus mitts and shields, it wears me down. Master Roger Koo is truly a great instructor and I like all the classes that I attend which is always challenging my body and mind. Koo Self Defense keeps me in great shape, helps me to lose weight and make me much stronger and fitter than I could do in any other sport. It is truly the greatest total body workout!

Having failed with a home fitness program I pursued an interest in karate. Most Karate schools have few week-day classes and focus on learning countless katas or forms. On October 11, 2001, I walked into Koo Self Defense Institute. Founder, Master Roger Koo assured me that Koo Self Defense provides a total body work-out, unmatched punching and kicking power, multiple classes. Practical punching and kicking replaced hours of learning katas. My first class was exhausting. A twenty six minute aerobic routine, twelve minute stretching (yoga), was followed by 20 minutes of kicking and punching shields and mitts. Students' punching and kicking power was impressive. Subsequent classes were as exhausting as the first. A variety of aerobic, punching/kicking drills provide a constant physical challenge. Health club aerobic classes are routine, students physically adapt and no longer receive any cardiovascular benefit. After five months of classes, my stamina, strength and work related stress have improved. My resting heart rate has decreased from 76 to 54 beats per minute.
