Landsailing - Aruba Active Vacations We organize landsailing trips on Aruba in the morning and in the afternoon. http://www.aruba-active-vacations.com/landsailing/
Extractions: One word... exhilarating Landsailing crafts can reach 2 to 3 times the speed of the accompanying wind. Under normal wind conditions, landsailors may reach even 35 mph. Landsailing on Aruba is exciting... your ultimate fun in the sun. Aruba Active Vacations is the only company which provides landsailing on Aruba. Landsailing is quite easy to learn. You are navigating with your legs and you control the sail with a sheet rope – just pull the rope to sheet in to step on the gaz and refrain from pulling the rope for sheeting out and slowing down. The sail is about 5 square meters in size. Just sheet in and hold on for the ride of your life. Dare to do something you have never done before. We organize trips in the morning and in the afternoon. We pick you up at your hotel and bring you to the land sailing location. This can be either at the salinja (which is Papiamento for salt lake - although you won't find much salt there) close to the Fisherman's Huts, or we go to Aruba's beautiful North coast behind the light house. Both places are ideal for land sailing. The trip takes about three hours. You will get picked up at your hotel, have about 15 minutes of instructions and the rest of the time you will be zooming across the landscape. After that you get dropped of at your hotel again. We provide non-alcoholic drinks, land carts and protective gear. You have other ideas, tell us and we change our schedule. Your safety, our business

Landsailing landsailing. by James Hart . Published December 2000. Whatever you call them landyachts, landsailers, sandyachts or dirtboats - they are all sail or wing powered vehicles driven only http://extremz.com/main/archive/dirt/landsaildec00.htm
Extractions: LANDSAILING by James Hart Published: December 2000 Whatever you call them - landyachts, landsailers, sandyachts or dirtboats - they are all sail or wing powered vehicles driven only by the wind. They can be found on dry lakes, beaches and even parking lots all over the world. It's hard to describe the feeling one gets while landsailing. It can range from near silent ghosting along in complete relaxation to an 'over the edge,' eyes-wide-open adrenaline rush. Whatever style you prefer, once you've tried it, you'll not forget it. Few sports offer such relaxation. Few sports offer such excitement! And all from the same vehicle. Yet for all the thrills, it's proven to be a safe sport, and it's also environmentally sound. Landsailing is a very low impact sport. No gas, oil, spinning wheels or loud exhausts! Wind requirements for landsailing begin at about 5 mph. Most yachts will head back to camp in wind over 35 mph. Small landyachts in the right conditions can sail two to three times as fast as the wind, or as fast as 50 to 60 mph in about 25 or 30 mph winds. Larger, more efficient (and stable!) yachts routinely sail five times wind speed for over 70 mph. The current record as of March 1999 is 116.7 mph in 25 mph wind. That's much faster than the usual 35-60 mph on the average weekend out on the drylakes. The typical modern landyacht is a three-wheeled vehicle with a single, fully battened sail. Steering is accomplished with a single front wheel controlled by the pilot's feet on a steering bar, and the pilot sits over or behind the rear axle. Sail control is usually with a hand-controlled sheetline through a ratchet block and several pulleys or 'blocks.' The sail starts out in a full rounded shape for power. Then, as speed picks up, the pilot 'sheets in' tighter making the sail assume a flatter shape with less drag.
Landsailing In America Excerpted by permission of the author from the May 12 1998 issue of the AMERICAN landsailing FEDERATION newsletter. landsailing in America. By Nord Embroden http://www.nalsa.org/landsailing_in_america.htm
Extractions: Landsailing in America By Nord Embroden I remember a non-successful attempt at landsailing in 1956 with a bed sheet for a square sail and a push car. A puff of wind came and my whole rig went over the front. 1958 I installed a dingy sail on a Soap Box Derby car. This car would sail with two kids at dangerous boardwalk speeds. I remember that the torque of the mast would lock up the steering bar during gusts adding more excitement. Nord and his friends were the terrors of the peninsula in Long Beach. and was experimenting with landyacht design. Don and I became friends and worked on many landsailing projects together. Over the years Don designed several beautiful yachts that were very unique. A very early yacht was constructed of tubing and cloth. The yacht could be folded in to a small package and placed in the trunk of the car. His Windbuggy competition was a lightweight space frame of tubing with and extruded aluminum mast and sulky spoked wheels. Later Don designed and built several Windbuggy Juniors, the first yachts designed specifically for children.

Extractions: Class 3 gathering. Model Land Yachts is a sport with a solid base of dedicated enthusiasts and racers who appreciate landsailing because it is easy to learn and challenging to master. It is an inexpensive sport; whether you're just beginning or a seasoned racer. Races involve groups ranging from local clubs to international competitors. And, it's environmentally friendly! In fact, the U.S. Bureau of Land Management has rewarded racers and enthusiasts with special access to dry lakes for competitions. It's an increasingly popular sport that is enjoyed by a diverse range of people. The models I have developed are the result of years of racing experience and technical knowledge of the particular mechanics of landsailers. While there are some similarities (both sailboat and landsailer have a sail, for example), there are some fairly distinct differences between them: most notably.......speed! Think of half a high-performance glider (airplane)....on edge and on wheels, and you're beginning to get the idea. Stiletto is designed by three-time America's Landsailing Cup winner, long-time R/C modeler, and all-around interesting person Robert Weber. He has been landsailing since 1986 and has traveled the world for the sport: participating in international competitions in Europe and Australia.

We will address each of these in order. To get you started with terminology, the is a drawing of a basic landyacht, with many of it's parts labeled. Familiarize yourself with them, it will help as we go along, and on the dry lake as well. The following information is presented based on sailing a Spirit landyacht, by Nord Design. Most of this information would be applicable to other landyachts as well. Important: As you read the following material, keep notes and jot down anything you do not understand, and ask me about it on the dry lake and I will make it clear to you. Tell tales indicate airflow Forestay and sidestays hold the mast up Battens are used to control sail shape The mast holds the sail The sails converts airflow to lift, propelling the yacht The boom, blocks, and sheetline are a system allowing the pilot to control the lift provided by the sail
