It is a direct descendant of baseball although some key differences are that softballs are larger than baseballs and the pitches are thrown underhand rather than overhand. Softball is played on a smaller diamond than in baseball; a softball field's average distances from home plate to the center, left and right field fences are 220, 200 and 200 feet respectively (the corresponding baseball field average distances are 410, 325 and 325 feet). Despite the game's name, the standard softball is not soft; in fact, it is harder than a baseball. First photo of a Softball team, Chicago, 1897

Sami Fagan lofted a ball to shallow center field, but a diving catch by center fielder Haley Downs gave the Bullets their second out and after pitcher Lori Spingola got Ryan Iamurri to fly out to left field, East Cobb earned their spot in fast pitch history.
Extractions: Softball Field Dimensions: Outfield Measurements Softball Field Dimensions vary in overall size when you are talking about the outfield measurements. Many times these measurements are affected by the size of the lot the field is on. Softball leagues themselves will adopt differing outfield sizes depending on levels of play and other factors. Common fence distances start at 150 feet for the younger ages and extend to over 225 feet for the older ages. These measurements are also different for men's verses women's leagues and fast pitch vs. slow pitch rules.
Modified Pitch Softball Rules | EHow.com Modified Pitch Softball Rules. Modified pitch softball uses a combination of fastpitch and slow-pitch rules. This makes the game slightly more challenging than the average http://www.ehow.com/way_5139110_modified-pitch-softball-rules.html
Extractions: Home Sports Softball ... Modified Pitch Softball Rules By an eHow Contributor I want to do this! What's This? Modified pitch softball uses a combination of fast-pitch and slow-pitch rules. This makes the game slightly more challenging than the average recreational softball game without requiring world-class skills from the players. The National Softball Association has issued rules to cover modified pitch softball leagues throughout the country. Teams can play only nine players in the field in a modified pitch softball league, but up to 11 players may be in the batting lineup if the two optional extra players (EPs) are used. These EPs are optional and will bat in the order, but not play defense in the field. The teams may also choose to use a designated hitter (DH) to bat in the lineup instead of one of the fielders. A player who is replaced by a substitute is allowed to re-enter the game one time, so long as he or she remains in the same position in the batting order. Aluminum or wooden bats may be used, but they must be on the NSA's list of approved bats. No bat can be longer than 34 inches or weigh more than 38 ounces. The umpire has the right to remove any bat from play if he determines that it is cracked or dented to the point of being dangerous. The bat must have a grip that is between 10 and 15 inches long. The pitcher must wear a glove that is one solid color, but not gray or white. No distracting white, gray, or optic yellow circles may be drawn on the glove.

Extractions: Home Sports Softball ... How to Throw a Knuckleball in Slow-Pitch Softball By eHow Member I want to do this! What's This? User-Submitted Article In throwing a knucleball in slow-pitch one has to realize that speed of the ball has alot to do with the balls movement. One can still have the ball 'dance' so to speak, but it does take alittle more effort and some good old fashion wind to accomplish some of the movement. Difficulty: Moderate In the first step, lets look at slow pitch and modified pitch. The modified pitch in softball has a little more speed and alot less arch than the slow pitch. This being said it is alot easier to get movement on the ball because of the speed alone. The challenge is lets say in slow pitch not so much as to get alot of movement but to take the spin off the ball so that if there is any wind that in itself would make the ball move somewhat. The hand placement on the ball is what creates or takes away the spin on the ball. By using the threads of the ball and placing the first two fingers with the first knuckles on the threads in a bent position one has the beginning of the pitch. The problem might be the size of the ball verses the size of someone's hand.

Modified Pitch Softball Modified Pitch Softball Modified pitch softball is a unique brand of softball that is basically a cross between slowpitch and fast-pitch softball. Pitchers deliver the ball http://www.iaswww.com/apr/Sports/Softball/Modified_Pitch/
Extractions: Modified pitch softball is a unique brand of softball that is basically a cross between slow-pitch and fast-pitch softball. Pitchers deliver the ball without an arc but are limited in their motion (no windmill, etc.) so the pitching speeds are slower than normal fast pitch softball. There is bunting and stealing so the game is more like baseball.

Extractions: It's that time of year, college world series time. I'm sure the internet message boards are full of various topics regarding teams, games, situational plays, etc. I admit, I watch the games from time to time but, my wife will not watch them with me anymore. It usually only takes me 1/2 an inning before I start screaming at the TV about something. Usually, it has to do with a pitcher's mechanics or pitch selection but sometimes is has to do with what the commentators are talking about. But, I want to spend some time covering some of these things that drive me bananas. These are in no particular order. This is Division 1 college and I've seen some of the worst pitching mechanics ever. Those that call me arrogant and an elitist will say that the girls must be doing something right since they got to Division 1 colleges! It's hard to argue that point. But, I can tell you this much. The ones with the bad mechanics will never be the household names that people talk about for generations. Joan Joyce, Lisa Fernandez, etc. are names that people will talk about forever. It's about time we realized that pitching in college no longer has the same meaning as yesteryear. 20 years ago, not every college had a softball program. Now, nearly EVERY college is playing softball. So, things have been watered down a little, in my humble opinion. But many of today's pitchers have absolutely shocking mechanics and it's scary to think of how good they could be if they pitched correctly. I'm
