Extractions: From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search See also: Muni (disambiguation) Mountain unicycling is an emerging adventure sport that consists of traversing rough terrain on a unicycle . Mountain unicycling can be done on the same terrain as a mountain bike . However, unicycles typically lack a gear system (even though there is a two-gear-hub available), preventing the user from coasting or reaching high speeds. Mountain unicycling usually takes place on specially designed unicycles, which are equipped with strong hubs, large, knobby tires, high-grip pedals and rugged frames. Some are also equipped with rim brakes, having the lever mounted under the tip of the saddle. The brake helps to compensate the downhill-slope force but is usually not used to decelerate or stop. MUni riders also need a few additional skills than required for either mountain biking or regular unicycling, with core strength and balance being key. Muni events recognized by the International Unicycling Federation at Unicons are: cross-country, uphill and downhill with the possibility of North Shore downhill.

It is a pretty mild walk on the body; however we passed two guys that were doing it on unicycles. Which is a pretty impressive mix of skill and courage. The second guy had blooded up knees and legs, so he had obviously taken a spill somewhere. They were in good spirits about doing it too. Mountain biking is common in Phoenix, there are plenty of places to do it, however, this is the first time I have ever seen anyone mountain unicycling. Update: A quick googling finds MUni . Regular unicycles are also commonly used in mountain unicycling, but break easily. Mountain unicycles can be ridden on the same terrain as a mountain bike , or even rougher terrain. Mountain unicycling is a slower-paced sport than mountain bicycling , primarily because the lack of gears makes it impossible to go very fast. Unicycles are lighter than bicycles making them faster to ride uphill. Additionally, unicycles are also more difficult to ride than bicycles and cannot easily coast (although there is a style of riding where the rider rests his/her feet on the frame rather than using the pedals, essentially coasting). Each year, many unicyclists gather for the California Mountain Unicycle Weekend.

Extractions: What is MUni? MUni stands for Mountain Unicycling. It's also known as Rough Terrain Unicycling, All Terrain Unicycling, or even UMX. Like mountain biking, you don't need a mountain to do it. It's just the act of riding unicycles off road. MUni has been a revolution in the unicycling community, sparking a tremendous effort to build better, stronger unicycles. Some of this new technology has of course spread to other types of unicycles; good for everybody! There is just something satisfying about taking an inherently unstable vehicle like a unicycle, and riding it in places nobody thought it could go. The early years of MUni led to vast strides in the types of terrain that can be successfully ridden by unicycle. Certainly anyplace a bike can go, a unicycle can follow. And we can still turn sharper, and fit through narrower spaces than the bikes! This site is intended as an information point for the California Mountain Unicycle Weekends . You can read Brett Bymaster's (very old) MUni FAQ , or see a whole list of useful links that will help you find more information about MUni.

The California Mountain Unicycle Weekend is the first event of its kind, and this will be our fourth annual event! Bruce has the up-to-the-minute MUni Weekend information page at . Above is an example of a scenic Santa Cruz trail with Bruce and Nathan Hoover on it. BEACH BOARDWALK: No trip to Santa Cruz is complete (to me) without a visit to the Boardwalk and a ride on the famous Giant Dipper roller coaster , which is celebrating its 75th year. We have left a space in the schedule to allow us to go there for a ride. COMPETITIONS: They have always been popular in the past, and we'll have some here too. There will be an Observed Trials competition and an uphill race, with novice and expert courses.

Extractions: Yes that's right, Mountain Unicycling, and no I'm not kidding. You've probably seen a couple pictures by now, and you probably have a bunch of funky questions. With almost a decade of unicycling and a couple years of mountain unicycling under my belt, I'd like to claim that I've heard them all (but I'm always surprised). So here's a few questions I get a lot along with some answers. A: Yes, otherwise I'd fall off (OK that's the smart mouth answer) A: No, are you? (That's a smart mouth answer too). I wouldn't ask a unicyclist this question. To say its a big fat put down is an understatement. You might end up with a unicycle where the sun don't shine. More serious questions: A: You just stop pedaling. A unicycle is direct drive. Direct drive means that the pedals are attached directly to the axle no gears, no chain, no brakes, etc (look at this picture ). So to stop, all you have to do is stop pedaling. Its kinda like walking you don't need brakes to stop walking, you just stop stepping and wala, you stop.
