Extractions: Andreas V. Georgiou is a native of Greece and has lived in the United States since 1979. For primary and secondary education he attended Athens College in Greece. He received his BA (Summa Cum Laude, Phi Beta Kappa) from Amherst College in Economics and Political Science/Sociology and his PhD from the University of Michigan in Economics. He has worked for the International Monetary Fund (IMF) since 1989. The author received a classical education in Greece and has continued his pursuit of classical studies in private since then, including in the context of producing his present book on Pankration. His practical knowledge of the subject of this book is based on his study of martial arts/combat sports (he has a black belt in JuJitsu and experience in boxing) as well as teaching experience in this area. He has also competed in track and field and Olympic weightlifting.

Pankration is considered by some to be the original mixed martial art . A hybrid form of wrestling and the striking arts , pankration dates back to the ancient Greeks, who practiced the art in the original Olympic games . Since then, the art has evolved, spawning a mixed martial arts organization in its name. The organization was made most famous by fighters like Bas Rutten and the Shamrock brothers, Frank and Ken. One way in which pankration differs from standard wrestling is in the inclusion of the striking arts. While most wrestling forbids striking of any kind, pankration allows for strikes with both the hands as well as the feet. While striking is permitted, closed-fist striking to the head is not, and kicking is focused on the legs and midsection of opponents, meaning that strikes generally are used as a setup to weaken your opponent, more so than a means of finishing the fight. Leg kicks are a popular and effective weapon in a pankration athlete's arsenal. Leg kicks are thrown by targeting a snap kick at either the inside or outside of an opponent's leg. While these kicks may not seem lethal to an outsider, they can be extremely painful and damaging, making it much harder for the fighter to stand, or shoot with the leg being attacked later in the fight.

It is derived from two root words: pan meaning �all� and kratos meaning �strength or force.� Differing from other Olympia counterparts such as wrestling, pankration allowed strikes and throws. The only attacks that were not allowed were those consider dishonorable, such as biting or attacks to the eyes. The contests would continue until sunset or an opponent giving up and sometimes even death! The champion would be recognized as the greatest all-around athlete of the whole world. Under the leadership of Alexander the Great, it is believed that his armies helped to spread this art into the Eastern worlds. While it is debated how much influence this art had on the present day Eastern Martial Arts such as Kung Fu and Karate, it is clear that characteristics from pankration do exist in many current day styles.
