This includes mobility disabilities, amputees, visual disabilities and those with cerebral palsy. The Paralympic Games are held every four years, following the Olympic Games, and are governed by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) -Â (The Paralympic Games are sometimes confused with the Special Olympics, which are only for people with intellectual disabilities.) When did the Paralympic Games First start? The Paralympics first started in 1948 when Ludwig Guttmann organized a sports competition which involved world war 2 veterans that had spinal injuries. Afterwards a similar event was organized in Toronto, Canada where different disability groups were added and the idea of merging together and taking part in athletic sports was a success. The name derives from the Greek "para" ("beside" or "alongside") and thus refers to a competition held in parallel with the Olympic Games. No relation with paralysis or paraplegia is intended, however, the word Paralympic was originally a portmanteau combining 'paraplegic' and 'Olympic'. The number of athletes participating in Summer Paralympic Games have increased from 400 athletes from 23 countries in Rome in 1960 to 3806 athletes from 136 countries in Athens in 2004.

If we take this inclusionary ideal further, we come upon an interesting question. If "it's the taking part that counts", do we need the Paralympics? The Paralympic Games are equivalent to the Olympics, but restricted to athletes with physical disabilities. They include traditional athletic events as well as categories like wheelchair racing and wheelchair basketball. The Paralympics seem a perfectly reasonable idea. They allow disabled athletes to compete in events better suited to their needs. They can highlight the bravery of some athletes who have overcome crippling injury or disease and gone on to train to a high standard.
Extractions: On Saturday (Oct 2), Lisa Kearney produced the finest performance of her fledgling career to win her third World Cup medal in twelve months. In the 2010 GB Judo World Cup, the -48kg category was particularly strong. 28 athletes from 21 countries including World, European, Asian and Pan American medalists all competed for valuable Olympic qualifying points. After a first round bye, Kearney had a tough route to the semi finals. She enjoyed a convincing win against Marlene Robert (France) and a thrilling ‘Golden Score’ victory over former Asian Champion Jun Xiao of China. Lisa’s one defeat was in the semi final against the eventual winner and ‘Player of the Tournament’ Charlene Van Snick (Belgium). This meant that Kearney would have to face 2009 World Silver medalist Oiano Blanco in the Bronze medal match. The players had met once before in the Tunis Grand Prix in May, where the Spaniard made light work of the 20-year-old Irish girl, 8 years her junior. However a string of impressive performances over the summer suggested that Kearney would be a more formidable opponent in this Olympic qualifier. The contest lasted only 50 seconds before Kearney unleashed a spectacular combination that resulted in an ‘Ippon’ score and the coveted World Cup medal.

The intent of the Paralympics is to concentrate on the athlete's achievements rather than the disability. The Games are held every four years, just after the Olympic Games and at the same venues. MY EXPERIENCE AT THE GAMES For most of my life I have dreamed of someday competing against the best in the world. The 2000 Paralympics in Sydney gave me that opportunity. The experience proved to be far better than I had dreamed. When the time came to leave Sydney, I was sad to go. Sydney did such a wonderful job organizing and preparing for the Games. From conversations with other athletes that had been to previous Paralympics, the general feeling was that Sydney did the best job to date of hosting the Paralympics.
