MISSION STATEMENT July 26, 2009 Groton MA The mission of New England Walkers is to foster interest, participation, and sustained competitive excellence in the sport of race walking in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New Hampshire and Vermont. What's NEW? Despite all the publicity about running, there are twice as many people who walk for fitness as do run. According to the Perrier study: Fitness in America, some 17 million people run, while 34 million people walk for fitness. Becoming increasingly popular, race walking is an Olympic sport which produces a high level of fitness and is virtually injury-free. By straightening the knee as the leg passes under the body, body weight is placed on the skeleton which does not tire. Having one foot on the ground at all times allows some body weight to be supported causing less strain on the muscles.

Extractions: A big advocate of jogging as the ultimate form of exercise, I always thought walking was for those who just didn’t have the stamina for jogging. I was wrong. Walking can give your body just as much or more of a workout as jogging. And it also has the same wonderful health benefits - lowering blood pressure, stabilizing blood sugar, flattening abdomen while strengthening leg muscles, bones, and immune system - but is easier on your joints. There are many different ways to walk for exercise. Some people hike over rough and unsteady terrain. Others powerwalk or speedwalk without any rules as to form or technique. Some combine walking and jogging. Others compete in marathons and walk really long distances. Some walk to raise money for certain causes.

It descends from the "fair heel and toe" Pedestrians who raced shorter distances and, under slightly different rules, were the basis of the modern day sport of race walking.
