The Bicycle That Beats Train Bans | ETA The advent of the car brought an end to the railbiking although it is now a popular means of sight seeing. A company called Railbike Tours runs a tour along the scenic Willamette http://www.eta.co.uk/2009/09/03/bicycle-beats-train-bans
Extractions: ETA Thursday, 3 rd September, 2009 Commuters who have tried to combine a train journey with a bicycle trip can feel at best as if the rail operators are doing their best to dissuade them. So-called ‘railbiking’ has been around since the late 1860s when the pedal-powered vehicles were used by railroad companies for checking the track, moving workers and even providing breakdown services for stranded locomotives. The advent of the car brought an end to the railbiking although it is now a popular means of sight seeing. A company called Railbike Tours runs a tour along the scenic Willamette River between Lake Oswego and Portland in America. A spokesperson for the Environmental Transport Association ( ETA Whilst unlikely to ever be seen on British commuter lines, a use for rail bikes might have been found in the building of the National Cycle Network. Many miles of disused railway in Britain have been converted to become cycle tracks free of motorised traffic, but railbiking could have made use of the original tracks while they were still in place. Cycle insurance from ilovemybike.co.uk includes new-for-old replacement and cover for accidental damage (even at race events), third party insurance, personal accident cover and if you breakdown, we will even come out and recover you and your bike.

Extractions: Culture Watch Question of the Week Letters of the Week ... Host's View Here's a new one for the athletically inclined tourist: in the foothills of Mt. Rainier National Park in Washington State, you can now literally ride the rails through forests and valleys by pumping the pedals of a jerry-rigged bicycle. It travels, like a rollercoaster car down OR like a highwire act, on top of the tracks. It's called "railbiking." The Savvy Traveler's Tom Banse was game and sent these impressions. Ride the Rails by Bike by Tom Banse Listen with RealAudio Need audio help? Okay, if you're like me always on the lookout for a new thrill then railbiking sounds just loopy enough to demand it be tried. But you're thinking, what about the trains? A good question, because as railbike entrepeneur Michael Rohde acknowledges, "One train can ruin your whole day." Michael: "The Mt. Rainier Scenic Railroad has two routes that they run. During the day, we can run groups on the opposite piece of rail that they're using. We're always in contact with the conductor and with the shop. We have cell phones, all kinds of things to make sure the communication is there." Rohde has handcrafted a fleet of railbikes by buying eight department store mountain bikes and bolting on guidewheels and outriggers. The front wheel rolls securely in place over one rail with the outrigger attached to the other. The safety lecture for newcomers like me is short.

Extractions: In Elbe, Washington Enjoy a truly unique experience! For bicyclists and non-bicyclists alike! A Brief History of Railbiking Research shows that railbiking has been around nearly as long as railroads and bicycles. A railbike patent in the U.S. Patent Office database is dated 1869. Scores of patents for railbike systems were filed between 1880 and 1920 around the world. Railbikes were once used by railroad companies for track checking, moving workers at work sites as well as going for assistance when the locomotives broke down. Telegraph companies also used railbikes to maintain telegraph lines that often followed railways. In the Midwest and other regions with sufficient winds, workers using railbikes sometimes put up sails to power them along the tracks. Like its contemporary, the bicycle, railbike design went into decline with the advent of the internal combustion engine and the automobile. A few independently minded designers and tinkerers kept the concept alive for the last 90 years and today there is a resurgence of interest in railbiking.

Extractions: skip to main skip to sidebar Okay, let me just get this out of the way: We borrowed a canoe, we were all psyched to use it, but then I called the rangers and they said Jackson Lake was still frozen. So we didn't bring the canoe. Instead, we went through the annoying minutiae that comes with every backpacking trip, deciding what to take and what too big and what's too heavy and what's absolutely essential and what we should leave home (poor Snoopy!), because we'd being hiking and bushwhacking to the base of Mount Moran. But when we got there, it turned out the lake wasn't frozen at all. But now we didn't have the canoe. Plus, we learned there was still a lot of snow of the trail, and we'd be postholing the whole way to the foot of the Skillet Glacier. No fun! Then Craig looked at the mountain and decided he didn't like the way the snow looked, so we decided to do something else instead. And maybe it was just bad vibes. We went a little ways up Cascade Canyon to check out Baxter's Pinnacle, which we set aside for the following day, and to do a little free-form rock climbing on some random cliffs on the canyon's north side. We saw a helicopter overhead - Craig thought it was some kind of scenic flight, but I told him, no, that sort of thing didn't go on in the Tetons. If you see a helicopter in the Tetons, it's always bad, and you can always read about it in the paper the next day. Later, when I was climbing, Craig saw the chopper fly by again, this time dangling something that looked like a body bags.

Extractions: A greaser is a device attached to the railroad track to grease the wheel flanges on sharp curves, preventing wear. They can be difficult to spot if there is lush vegetation growing over the roadbed. The easiest thing to see is oily soil and hoses that pass across the track between the ties from one rail to the other. There is no obstruction on one rail. However, on the other rail you will find a large block of steel, the greaser pump, attached to the outside of the rail even with the top of the rail. A steel pin about one inch in diameter sticks up from the pump above the rail. Passing train wheels depress this pin to force out grease.
