Today the game, with two distinct variants, is far closer to the mainstream, with an international championship in each of its formats contested by both men and women, and national governing bodies for roller hockey established in over 20 countries. The first application of the roller skate in another sport was that of roller polo, a game played in the eastern United States in the 1870s, when ice hockey was in its infancy. A game similar to modern roller hockey began in England in the early 1900s, and it was played internationally both before and after World War II. It was this form of roller hockey that was contested as a demonstration sport at the 1992 Barcelona Summer Olympic Games. It is variously known as rink hockey, hardball hockey, quad hockey, or international-style ball hockey. It has specialized rules and tactics. With the development of the inline skate technology in the late 1980s, which permitted a skater to travel faster than was possible with the traditional quad skates, roller hockey evolved in a new direction. This variant of roller hockey, also known as inline hockey, has spawned leagues across North America and Europe that acted to create both high level competitions as well as those with a recreational sports focus. The Inline International Hockey Federation (IIHF) convened a world championship in 2005 that attracted 16 countries, including nations not associated with ice hockey success, such as Namibia and Taiwan.
Ohio State Roller Hockey Thank you to all of the teams that came out to the fall Ironman. We had 8 teams come out and compete in the Intermediate and Elite divisions. Both divisions were extremely http://osurh.com/
Extractions: March 8th, 2010 No comments I just wanted to say a quick thank you to all the people that came out and supported the OSU Club Roller Hockey Team at the Spring Ironman tournament. We had an awesome showing with 23 teams participating in 3 different divisions. This was the first tournament that we have run and it was amazing to see so many people come out for it. I really appreciate the professionalism that everyone showed as well. We stayed on schedule all day and the play out on the floor was great. Everyone was playing hard, competing, and having a great time. Most importantly the sportsmanship displayed on and off the rink was outstanding. I would like to thank all of the goalies that came out and played as well. I think probably half if not more of the goalies played on multiple teams (some playing as many as 18 games) and logged a ton of minutes. You guys are the true Ironmen and without you none of this would have been possible. Finally, I would like to congratulate the winners.

The Pittsburgh Phantoms The RHI s Phantoms spent one season in the league. Includes statistics, stories and player profiles. http://www.slackers.net/~atkinsj/phantoms.html
Extractions: The Pittsburgh Phantoms were (then) Penguins co-owner Howard Baldwin's entry into the second-year Roller Hockey International (RHI) . Making their home in the Civic Arena, the Phantoms played in only one season, 1994. The Phantoms managed a second place finish in their division and secured a spot in the post-season. After losing game #1 of the first round to Chicago 9-8, they came back with a vengence in game #2 winning 23-5. A "mini-game" went to the Phantoms 1-0, earning them a trip to the second round where they eventually fell to the Minnesota Arctic Blast. Solid efforts earned several players invitations to Penguins training camp at the end of that year. Unfortunately, none impressed enough to be offered contracts. Made up predominantly of players from the East Coast and Central Hockey Leagues, the Phantoms also dressed several former Penguins including Alain Lemieux, Warren Young, and Bryan Trottier. Also on the team was Erin Whitten, the only the second female goalie ever to play in a professional men's ice hockey league. One memorable regular season matchup pitted Whitten against Manon Rheaume of the New Jersey Rockin' Rollers. Whitten outplayed Rheaume, but the Phantoms' comparatively porous defense let her down in the losing effort. The Phantoms ranked 15th in the 24 team league in attendance with an average of 3,587 fans per game, which was more than 700/game below the league average. Their offence was the second most prolific with an average of 9.41 goals per game, ranking behind only to Minnesota. As mentioned above, their defense was as inept as the offense was spectacular. Their average of 8.77 goals against per game was third worst. At 57.0, their powerplay ranked them second in the league overall and ranked first at home with a 66.7 success rate. Despite their woeful defense, the Phantoms penalty killing was the fouth best in the league, killing off 59.2 percent of opponent power plays.
