They returned to Canada with two 5th place finishes and three gold medals. Recognizing there potential Sifu Jay organized to bring theses athletes and a three other recruits to the World Championships in China in December that same year. Thus, Natalie Pomerleau-Perron, Laurie MacNevin (nee Gibson), Danielle Mauirie, Jermey Kurcz, Nabil Babu, Jerrett Hansen, John MacNevin and Ernesto Bernal became the first Canadian team. Accompanying them were two of their training partners: Steve Lalla and John Iantisis. Despite being a small team of competitors, this group managed a 6th place finish in their World competition debut, with each of these 8 newcomers placing in the top 8 including a silver medal being awarded to young Jeremy Kurcz. Currently Team Canada is composed only of students of the International Shuai-Chiao Association- Canadian Chapter. As shuai-chiao gains national recognition Sifu Jay hopes to recruit more athletes from other Kung Fu organizations nationwide. Drawing from a larger pool of athletes to produce a team which fills each of the 20 possible weight and gender divisions, will produce an even more formidable Canadian team; thereby continuing to demonstrate that Team Canada is a force to be reckoned with.
