Extractions: From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search Skimboarding (or skimming ) is a boardsport in which a skimboard (a smaller counterpart to a surfboard) is used to glide across the water's surface. Unlike surfing, skimboarding begins on the beach, it starts with the dropping of the board onto the thin wash of previous waves. They may use their momentum to 'skim' out to breaking waves, which they then catch back into shore in a manner similar to surfing. Another aspect of skimboarding is 'flatland' which involves performing tricks derived from skateboarding such as ollies and shove-its on the wash of waves without catching shore breaks . Skimboarding originated in Southern california when lifeguards wanted an easy way to get accross the beaches of Laguna. From here skimboarding went as a way to travel down beaches to extreme riding into big shorebreak. Skimboarding: Definition From Answers.com n. The sport of riding a skimboard over shallow water on a beach and into oncoming waves close to shore. The board is usually tossed ahead and jumped on after a running approach. http://www.answers.com/topic/skimboarding
Extractions: parallel to the waves on a film of water on a circular board (skimboard or skimdisk) and simply zooming across the water and once you've mastered that, face on to the waves, where you skim into the wave on a film of water, hit the wave, turn and ride back in on the wave We will turn our attention to circular skimming first Although it is better to skim with a skimboard, it is also possible with a flat bodyboard - that is if you don't mind knackering it!! Warning - if you don't like falling over don't skim!! Luckily sand and water can be more forgiving than concrete so when you fall you can console yourself with this fact. Also when falling try to roll you should hurt yourself less. You could try skimming in a wetsuit, if yours is flexible enough, or if its the depths of winter in the UK.

There are skimboarding videos to view, travel bags and socks to protect your board, arch bars and front and back traction pads to keep your feet in place, tees and sweats to make you look good (but remember, we're not miracle workers), wet gear, stuff to make you go faster, stuff to make you stick longer, and stuff that stops that rash down there. There are longboard skates to get you from here to there, Indo boards for balance, Banshees to sling you, and a Stick that stops the hurt. Seriously, what else could you want? No, seriously, what else? Oh, and hey! If you're ordering stuff, remember $75 gets you

Extractions: Brad Domke Preparing To Make the Transition Skimboarding is a sport similar to surfing which takes place near the shore. The skimboarder stands about twenty feet from the ocean with skimboard in hand and waits for a wave. When they see a wave they run towards it with their skimboard still in hand. Upon reaching the wet sand they drop the board and jump onto it as quickly as possible. Once on the board, the skimmer must remain as stable as possible and prepare to make the transition to the ocean. The skimmer then (hopefully) glides out into the ocean toward the oncoming wave, banks off of it, and rides it back into shore. There are many possibilities for riding the waves and this is where skimboarding gets really interesting. See Skimming 101 for a more detailed description of how to get on your board and prepare to ride a wave. Modern skimboards are made out of fiberglass or carbon fiber and high density foam to serve as a core. The fiberglass/carbon fiber is a fabric which becomes stiff when saturated with resin and left to cure. When this fiberglass or carbon fiber is laid over a shaped piece of foam, saturated with resin and left to cure, a skimboard is made. Skimboards vaguely resemble surfboards (Click here for a picture), they are about half the length, half the thickness, and slightly wider. Unlike surfboards, skimboards have no skegs (fins on the bottom of the board used for controlling direction). They are much less stable and require a lot of practice to be able to control. Because they are less stable and specifically because they lack skegs, many things can be done on a skimboard that cannot be done on a surfboard.

Extractions: The United Skim Tour is the worlds only international professional skimboard tour. It exists as a sanctioning body for skimboarding events on both coast of the United States and abroad. The UST Board of Directors determines which events will count, how they will count and what to do if something goes wrong. They do this with the goal of promoting the growth and legitimacy of professional skimboarding, and the sport itself. The UST concept was first developed in 2000 as a way to unify existing events into a cohesive tour. At that time, meetings between industry figureheads and professional riders took place on both the East and the West coast, and a general framework for the tour was decided upon. However, a governing body was never put in place to make critical decisions as issues arose, and by the end of the 2005 season it was clear that something needed to be done. Basic rules for the competitive season were decided upon, such as which contests count, how they count, and what to do in several "what if" scenarios. This basic framework can be found in the UST Rulebook on the website.
