For you maybe these words mean nothing... but not for long :) Someone told me this sport is "...soccer, volleyball and gymnastics played in one." And in my home opinion the most exciting things about this game are the discoveries of how much you can do with your feet. Oh yes, it's worth being played. This skill ball game, originated in Asia, today has become an alternative sport, which is quite popular all over the world. History in brief. So the history of this sport movement is as following... I think it's not a surprise for you that every nation has her proud myriad of cultures, arts, literature and traditional sports. It is recorded in the cultures of South-East Asia nations as early as in the 11th century that the game was played extensively - Takraw in Thailand, Sipa in the Philippines, Sepakraga in Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei, Ching Loong in Myanmar, Rago in Indonesia and Kator in Laos. It is also recorded that in one of his many trips, the merchant Marco Polo brought back to Europe a game from China which was kicking an implement into the air and counting the number of kicks, a style resembling today's sepak takraw game. Sepak takraw is a skill ball game, which requires the use of the feet and head to keep the ball in the air in a targeted direction. Traditionally, villagers stand in a circle and display keen understanding and teamwork to help one another keep the ball in the air for as long as possible. It provided villagers of all ages with fun, recreation and a sense of shared community. This was the traditional circle game, evolved from many forms of kicking game. Today, the circle game is still popular throughout South-East Asia and has taken a hold as a form of recreational "sport for all".

It is a team game involving three players per side and the object is to volley the woven ball over the net into the opponents court using any part of the body except the hands or arms. Each team is allowed three contacts with the ball to get it over the net. Unlike the similar game concept of volleyball, in takraw on player may take more than one contact consecutively.Points are scored by the serving team, and points are gained if the opposing side fails to return the ball over the net, or a winning shot is played whereby the ball lands in the opponents court. The length of the game varies - there is no time limit. Matches are won by winning 2 out of 3 sets. To win a set, one team must reach 15 points. In 1996, ISTAF changed the rule so that no extra margin or extra points are played - the set is played straight and the first team to reach 15 points wins the set. The third set, if necessary is played to only 6 points and is referred to as a "tie-breaker".

Extractions: Sepaktakraw is a unique traditional game which originated from Southeast Asia for over 500 years in the present day countries of Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia, Laos, Myanmar and India. It began as a cooperative circle game where players would try to keep a small woven ball in the air as long as possible, passing it around to players in a circle form without using their hands or arms. Similar to the American game Hacky Sack, the game is still enjoyed in this traditional form throughout Southeast Asia. In 1965, the circle game adopted a more competitive format by various Southeast Asian countries and caught on as fast-paced action sport into what is officially known today as Sepaktakraw. Sepak is a term used in Malaysia meaning “kick” and Takraw is a Thai word for a “woven ball.” With the combining of the two words, the official name of the net game became Sepaktakraw. Takraw, for short, is now a widely popular sport in Southeast Asia and is spreading all over the world. Strategy of playing Takraw is similar to volleyball with players using their feet and heads to kick or head the ball instead of hands.

There are certain basic rules to takraw as a competition sport but it is often played without scoring and the participants just enjoy putting on a good show . While to the Western observer, it seems to be similar to volleyball, only one takraw version (called net takraw or sepak takraw ) has a similar game philosophy - to hit the ground in the field of the opposing team. In most other versions, the scoring is rather similar to gymnastics. Points are given for the skill with which

Sepak Takraw is a team sport that combines elements of volleyball and soccer, where competitors use only their feet and heads to volley a ball over a net. Overview Similar to volleyball in rules and gameplay, sepak takraw is an ancient southeast Asian game where players use their feet and legs to volley a ball over a net. Points are scored, among other ways, when the ball fails to clear the net or is handled too many times. The first team to score 21 points, wins a set and the first to win 2 sets, wins the match. Goal of Sepak Takraw Score more points than the opposition by using the feet and legs to volley a ball over a large net. Rules of Sepak Takraw Sepak takraw is played on a roughly 13 m by 6 m court rectangular court. A net (similar to those used in volleyball) is placed across the the middle of the court. The takraw is usually made of synthetic fiber or one woven layer, and weighs about 6 oz (5.3 oz for women). Each match is played between two regus, consisting of three players each. Play begins with one team kicking the takraw over the net, towards the opposing regu. Once the takraw is in play players can move anywhere on their side of the court. Points are awarded when the opposing regu commits a fault. Faults are called when the takraw falls outside the court's boundaries, when the takraw fails to cross to the opposing side, when players uses his/her hands or arms and when the takraw is played more than 3 times in succession. Each set is played to 21 points, with the winner required to win by 2 points. If after 2 sets the regus are tied, a third set is played. This tiebreak set is played to 15 points.
