Sara and I were very fortunate to have the support of all of our teammates, as well as friends like Greg Connelly, Carly Maconaghy, Leila Tunnell, Lindsey Hack, and all of the folks at USA Ultimate. The level of collaboration on this tournament was unlike anything I have ever experienced and it was truly a pleasure to work with all of the people involved. The vision for this tournament didn’t come overnight but was inspired by hours of brainstorming and lots of great ideas from friends. While planning for the tournament, we also decided to create Without Limits, an initiative designed to empower Women's Ultimate players to build up the Women’s Ultimate community and create more quality playing and learning opportunities. We had a great time planning Philly Fusion and watching the trade show and skills clinic happen was an incredible experience. In this feature, I've asked a variety of players in both the college and club divisions to share their experiences at Philly Fusion and to write about their vision for the Women's Division. My hope is that this feature challenges people to dream bigger and to find ways to create opportunities in their local Ultimate communities!

If you look a little closer, you will see some surprising things. First, you will never see hippies get more upset than on an Ultimate Frisbee field. It can be jarring to see people who look like they should be playing acoustic guitars yelling at each other about whether or not Blake stepped out of bounds. Secondly, you will notice that Ultimate Frisbee matches are the best place to meet white guys who wear headbands. Fortunately, ultimate frisbee offers a lot of opportunities for personal, professional and financial gain. Since the sport has yet to be integrated, you could command a high fee in terms of money or favors if you agree to join one of the many white leagues in your area. To a white person, having a diverse Ultimate team is almost as good as winning the championship. Almost.

We focus our attention now to the imminent Mixed Nationals to be held in the inlands of NSW, Bathurst. As tournament preparations come along and teams continue to train towards the coveted mixed title of Australia, this Mixed Nats is gaining momentum and is set to be one of the best so far. Among the current field of 24, 8 teams are representing NSW and this surely favors the odds of a NSW team taking out the tournament. Submitted by jamiebozza on Thu, 09/09/2010 - 20:24

Play is informal, although we do follow the standard UPA rules. We have regular intrasquad scrimmages at the Upper Pueblo soccer fields. All players are welcome and there are no club dues. If you don't know how to play, we will be happy to let you play while you learn. Some of the LA players travel to tournaments outside of Los Alamos and each year we host the Atomic Blast tournament which attracts teams from New Mexico, Colorado, and Arizona. History of Ultimate (Frisbee) The sport of Ultimate Frisbee as we know it started in 1968 at Columbia High School in Maplewood, NJ. A group of students from the school paper and the Student Council, led by Joel Silver(yes, it's the same guy as the film director), who was a member of both the paper and the council, developed the rules of what was then called Frisbee Football and what would develop into the modern sport of Ultimate. Silver had played Frisbee Football at a summer camp in Mount Hernon, Massachusetts in the summer of 1967, and when he returned to Maplewood, he proposed to the Student Council that the school form a Frisbee team. It was suggested as a joke, but was seconded and passed. Discussion of the Frisbee team occasionally came up during the school year, but was still mostly regarded as a joke. By the end of the year, however, Silver and other members of the council were organizing a game during their lunch period. Members of the school paper had been tossing a disc during their lunch, and in the spring members of the council and the paper began to play Frisbee Football with a black 150 gram, Wham-O Master Tournament Model(as opposed to the 175 gram Discraft Ultra Star Professional Disc used now). The people who made up the team were part of what made the sport so revolutionary. "It was a chance for The Columbian(the school paper) core - the intelligentsia and non-athletes of the school - to play a sport," says Silver. Many of the players were excellent students who were headed to Ivy League schools. According to Ed Summers, one of the original players, there was also a good representation of stoners. Summers said, "The core of us were largely among the better students. There were also some druggie types. We were about evenly split between the better students and the half who smoked dope."

Extractions: You’re running through a big field of grass, trying to catch a flying disc that a whole bunch of people are trying to keep away from you. Are you: NO! You’re playing Ultimate Frisbee! Ultimate Frisbee (sometimes just called Ultimate) is an outdoor sport played by two teams, usually of seven players each. The game is played on a big rectangular field similar to those used in football, with end zones at either end. The object is to keep passing the Frisbee forward to your teammates and ultimately get it to a player who’s in the end zone. Physically, and in terms of teamwork, the sport is a lot like football, soccer, hockey, or basketball. One thing that makes it truly unique is that you’re throwing a Frisbee (or flying disc) instead of kicking, hitting, or throwing a ball.
