From the start line in the bowels of Death Valley to the finish line high on Mt. Whitney, this one-of-a-kind foot race offers the promise of a supremely personal achievement along with international accolades for those who rise to the occasion. A true "challenge of the champions," the Badwater Ultramarathon pits approximately ninety of the world’s toughest athletes – runners, triathletes, adventure racers, and mountaineers – against one another and the elements. The time limit is forty-eight hours and the finisher's award is the coveted Badwater belt buckle. The Badwater Ultramarathon is, and always has been, an invitational race. Applicants will be considered purely upon their race application and its specific written merits. No applicant is guaranteed entry, including race veterans. The application submission period begins on February 1, 2011 and ends on February 15, 2011. A committee of five race staff members, one of whom is the race director, will then review and rank each application on a scale of to 10.

The answer is simple to me... As with games like Rugby or Squash, you don’t race ultra marathons to train. That’s why they are called ULTRA! Whether it’s a 50km trail race or a 7 day stage race , you have to train specifically for each and every race, and be as best prepared that you can possibly be. Every time. No exceptions. Otherwise you risk frequent injury, disillusionment and underachievement. This isn’t just an issue of speed or tempo, but an issue of common sense. Luckily with the technological tools at our fingertips, there is no excuse nowadays for athletes to enter races without having done sufficient research in order to maximise their chances of a successful step up in race distances, such as marathons beyond 42,195 kilometres, or terrain.
