    LEONARD BERNSTEIN
Leonard Bernstein, one of the most important figures in twentieth-century music, was born in Massachusetts into a Russian-Jewish immigrant family. He had his first piano lessons in 1928, and soon recognised that his life was to be dominated by music. In 1930 he began piano lessons with Susan Williams at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, giving his first piano recital two years later, when he also started to study piano with Helen Coates, later to be his personal secretary. In 1934 he played Grieg Walter Piston amongst others. In 1937 he became friends with several highly influential musicians: the composer Aaron Copland , of whom Bernstein was a life-long supporter; the conductor Dimitri Mitropoulos , whose flamboyant direction of the Boston Symphony Orchestra convinced Bernstein that conducting was to be his career; and

    Biography
American musician, a pianist, conductor and composer of symphonies, ballets, musical comedies, chamber music and film scores; a fabulous talent. After ten years and 943 concerts, he retired from the New York Philharmonic in May 1969 to devote time to composition. He has been a celebrity since 11/14/1943 when, as a 25-year-old assistant conductor, he was called on without rehearsal to substitute for the ailing Bruno Walter on a few hours notice and to lead the New York Philharmonic in a national broadcast. An exuberant personality with a tumultuous career, he has composed hit Broadway musicals, including "West Side Story" as well as about a dozen classical works. A versatile and impassioned musician, he won many awards, Grammy's, Emmys and a Tony. Flamboyant and exhibitionist, he was on center-stage at all times. Before him, there were no American conductors of world-class stature, but he rose to prominence just as TV and the LP records were becoming mass media and he reached an enormous audience. Bernstein was a man whose conflicts and motivations were as extraordinary as his undeniable talents. He began playing piano at ten and could have been a concert pianist, had he chose. He could read through the most difficult orchestral score for the first time as though he had studied it for years. His musical memory was awesome.

    Bernstein, Leonard
(b . Aug. 25, 1918, Lawrence, Mass., U.S.d. Oct. 14, 1990, New York, N.Y.), American conductor and composer noted for his accomplishments in both classical and popular music, for his flamboyant conducting style, and for his pedagogic flair, especially in concerts for young people. Bernstein played piano from the age of 10, attended Boston Latin School and Harvard University (A.B., 1939), and studied at the Curtis Institute of Music, Philadelphia (1939-41). He studied conducting with Fritz Reiner and Serge Koussevitzky. In 1943 Bernstein was appointed assistant conductor of the New York Philharmonic; his first signal success came on Nov. 14, 1943, when he was summoned unexpectedly to substitute for the conductor Bruno Walter. His technical self-assurance under difficult circumstances and his interpretive excellence made an immediate impression and marked the beginning of a brilliant career. He subsequently conducted the New York City Center orchestra (1945-47) and appeared as guest conductor in the United States, Europe, and Israel. In 1953 he became the first American to conduct at La Scala in Milan. From 1958 to 1969 Bernstein was conductor and musical director of the New York Philharmonic, sometimes, as piano soloist, conducting from the keyboard. With this orchestra he made several international tours in Latin America, Europe, the Soviet Union, and Japan. His popularity increased through his appearances on television not only as conductor and pianist but also as a commentator and entertainer. After 1969 he continued to write music and to perform as a guest conductor with several symphonies throughout the world.
