LEONARD BERNSTEIN
Leonard Bernstein, one of the most important figures in twentieth-century music, was born in Massachusetts into a Russian-Jewish immigrant family. He had his first piano lessons in 1928, and soon recognised that his life was to be dominated by music. In 1930 he began piano lessons with Susan Williams at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, giving his first piano recital two years later, when he also started to study piano with Helen Coates, later to be his personal secretary. In 1934 he played Grieg Walter Piston amongst others. In 1937 he became friends with several highly influential musicians: the composer Aaron Copland , of whom Bernstein was a life-long supporter; the conductor Dimitri Mitropoulos , whose flamboyant direction of the Boston Symphony Orchestra convinced Bernstein that conducting was to be his career; and

Leonard Bernstein
This iconic New Yorker was actually born in the environs of Boston, Mass., the son of Russian immigrants. His father, Samuel, had become successful in the beauty-supply business. His mother, Jennie, had a love of art and music. Over his father's objections, she sent the boy for piano lessons. He became very good, even at a young age. His father, however, wanted him to join the family firm, but Leonard was adamant about studying music. He attended Harvard, where he studied with Edward Burlingame Hill and Walter Piston. After Harvard, Bernstein studied at the Curtis Institute with Vengerova (piano), Randall Thompson (orchestration), and Fritz Reiner (conducting). Undoubtedly, however, the great influence on him as a young man was

Leonard Bernstein: Biography
Posted by under Bernstein, Leonard No Comments Composer and conductor Leonard Bernstein was born on August 25, 1918 in Lawrence, Massachusetts, U.S.A. He attended Harvard University, the Curtis Institute of Music, and the Tanglewood Institute. His teachers included Walter Piston, Fritz Reiner,
Randall Thompson, and the conductor of the Boston Symphony, Serge Koussevitzky.
In 1943, he took a position as an assistant conductor at the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. It was there, on November 14th of the same year, that he famously  substituted for Bruno Walter at short notice for a concert at Carnegie Hall. This concert was heard on national radio broadcast and garnered Bernstein great recognition. Bernstein accepted the position of Music Director for the New York Symphony Orchestra in 1945.
In 1951 he took charge of the conducting and orchestral departments at Tanglewood, and in 1958, he became the Music Director for the New York Philharmonic. He was in high demand for conducting appearances around the world and had the opportunity to conduct Maria Callas at the Teatro Alla Scala, becoming the first American to conduct at that theater.
