ASIAN BROWN CLOUD The term Asian Brown Cloud seems to have been around for a couple of years in scientific circles, but came to prominence in August 2002 in a report prepared by climatologists at the UN Environment Programme in preparation for the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg that month. The good news, they say, is that unlike other causes of pollution and climate change, this one is curable if Asians can shift to more efficient ways of burning fuels. The Asian brown cloud is caused by large amounts of aerosols (such as soot and dust) produced in the combustion of fossil fuels and biomass across the region. It has been linked to decreases in summer monsoon rainfall in India since 1930, the southward shift of the summer monsoon in eastern China, declines in agricultural production, and increases in respiratory and cardiovascular problems in the people inhabiting the region.

An enormous cloud of 'dynamically interacting' pollutants three kilometers thick in places, the Asian brown cloud is basically just smog , but smog that is not localized to a particular urban area (such as the well-known smog clouds of Los Angeles or Mexico City ). Instead, the Asian brown cloud covers a vast area which includes the Northern Indian Ocean , and large parts of India Pakistan Afghanistan Southeast Asia and China . The cloud has been collecting for three to four months every year for the last couple of decades, drastically affecting the climate of South Asia and directly or indirectly killing millions of people.

How now, brown cloud
Certain kinds of weather, especially in the winter, help cause what is known as the brown cloud, a yellowish-brown strip visible along the eastern horizon. It is produced by emissions from cars, industry, and agriculture along the Front Range, especially in the South Platte River valley near Denver. The brown cloud forms through an inversion, a shallow pool of relatively cool air near the ground that is separated from warmer air aloft. The more shallow the pool, the more concentrated the pollutants and, typically, the more vivid the brown cloud. Above the inversion, the air may be quite fresh and the visibility high.

Big brown Asian cloud blamed for glacial melting
By Timothy McDonald Posted August 2, 2007 15:50:00
Updated August 2, 2007 16:01:00 The pollution consists of pollutants from woodfires, cars and factories. (AFP: Frederic J Brown) Satellite pictures over much of Asia and the Indian Ocean show an enormous brown stain hanging in the air - an unwanted byproduct of rapid economic growth which is having a curious effect on climate change and is affecting Australia. Named The Asian Brown Cloud , it is made up of pollutants from woodfires, cars and factories, and scientists now believe it to be the reason glaciers in the Himalayas are melting. The United Nations Environment Program is worried that Asian glacial melting could lead to water shortages and floods for the hundreds of millions of people who live downstream. Professor Veerabadran Ramanathran from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography says research shows heat from the cloud is responsible for global warming in some areas.

Low temps bring brown cloud to Phoenix
Cooler air traps pollutants over Valley
by Shaun McKinnon - Nov. 14, 2008 12:00 AM
The Arizona Republic The skies over metro Phoenix have turned dirtier as cooler weather has created ideal conditions for the return of the seasonal brown cloud. Visibility was rated as poor by the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality on Thursday, though pollution levels did not climb high enough to trigger a health watch or warning. State air-quality officials issued a health watch Tuesday after a weekend cold front stirred up dust and other particulates and trapped them over the Valley. "We are going to see much more of this as we head into the winter months, especially in the mornings and evenings," said Holly Ward, spokeswoman for the Maricopa County Air Quality Department. "The biggest factor is still what we put into the air. But this time of year, it's also the weather." Pollutants - dust, vehicle exhaust, particles from wood-burning fireplaces - accumulate in the air and get trapped there by a temperature inversion.

Urban brown clouds are heavily influenced by thermal inversions in the atmosphere and occur over several cities. Atmospheric brown clouds, in contrast, are a more widespread, regional phenomena. The first observations of these phenomena were made in the late 1990s as part of the Indian Ocean Experiment (INDOEX), in which coordinated

    The Brown Cloud Summit
In March 2000, Governor Jane Hull formed the Governor's Brown Cloud Summit, a committee of local politicians and business people, dedicated to restoring the Valley's air to its once pristine clear blue. Chaired by meteorologist and ex-State Senator Ed Phillips, the Summit examined this issue for ten months. According to the Brown Cloud Summit's final report, the process described above not only obscures the once clearly visible mountains surrounding the Valley, it also contributes to higher than average incidents of health problems, especially respiratory ailments including allergies and asthma, leading to higher than normal mortality rates from heart and lung diseases.
What Must Be Done To Improve Phoenix Air Quality
The Summit concluded that only a cooperative solution would reduce or eliminate the Brown Cloud. First, Phoenix area residents must understand the causes and effects of air pollution. Then, in cooperation with local businesses and elected officials, they must reduce the introduction of pollutants into the air through voluntary and regulated methods.

    August 12, 2002
By CNN's Marianne Bray and wire reports
HONG KONG, China A dense blanket of pollution, dubbed the "Asian Brown Cloud," is hovering over South Asia, with scientists warning it could kill millions of people in the region, and pose a global threat. In the biggest-ever study of the phenomenon, 200 scientists warned that the cloud, estimated to be two miles (three kilometers) thick, is responsible for hundreds of thousands of deaths a year from respiratory disease. By slashing the sunlight that reaches the ground by 10 to 15 percent, the choking smog has also altered the region's climate, cooling the ground while heating the atmosphere, scientists said on Monday.
The potent haze lying over the entire Indian subcontinent from Sri Lanka to Afghanistan has led to some erratic weather, sparking flooding in Bangladesh, Nepal and northeastern India, but drought in Pakistan and northwestern India.
"There are also global implications, not least because a pollution parcel like this, which stretches three kilometers high, can travel half way round the globe in a week, " U.N. Environment Program chief Klaus Toepfer told a news conference in London on Sunday. The U.N.'s preliminary report comes three weeks before the Earth Summit in Johannesburg, which opens on August 26, where all eyes will be on how not to overburden the planet.
    Global threat
While haze hovers over other parts of the world, such as above America and Europe, what surprised scientists was just how far the cloud extended, and how much black carbon was in it, according to A P Mitra from India's National Physical Laboratory. Asia's brown haze is altering the weather, creating acid rain. A cocktail of aerosols, ash, soot and other particles, the haze's reach extends far beyond the study zone of the Indian subcontinent, and towards East and Southeast Asia.

    Discovery of 'Asian Brown Cloud'
Over Indian Ocean Sets Off Fight
    By JOHN J. FIALKA
Staff Reporter of THE WALL STREET JOURNAL

LA JOLLA, Calif. In 1999, Indian scientist Veerabhadran Ramanathan led a team of researchers that discovered one of the largest bodies of pollution ever measured. Using planes, ships, balloons and satellites, his multinational team of 200 scientists tracked a gritty brown blanket of soot, dust and smoke that was nearly two miles thick. It hung over an area of the Indian Ocean roughly the size of the U.S. Quickly dubbed the "Asian Brown Cloud," the discovery opened a new frontier in atmospheric study. It suggested that man-made soot may be almost as critical a factor in causing climate change as the invisible layers of carbon dioxide and other so-called greenhouse gases emitted from power plants, factories and cars. The study and subsequent research showed such clouds could blow thousands of miles, contributing to global warming and spreading harmful pollutants such as mercury and acid far from their point of origin. Last August a United Nations agency warned the cloud could lead to "several hundreds of thousands of premature deaths" from respiratory disease, as well as droughts and crop failures. But now the research and prospects for further funding to advance it have been shrouded by a cloud of international squabbling.
