Classical Music Home PERCY GRAINGER The Australian pianist and composer Percy Grainger, an eccentric figure, may seem of marginal importance. Nevertheless he wrote a number of works that continue to give considerable pleasure, as do some of the remarkable arrangements that he devised. He became a friend of Grieg and of Delius and took a strong interest in the active collection of folk-songs. He gave particular attention to the creation of music not bound by the traditional restraints of form and harmony. In 1918 he became an American citizen. Instrumental Music Grainger's original instrumental music includes the delightful Handel in the Strand, intended for piano trio, piano quartet or string orchestra, and Mock Morris, for either string sextet or violin and piano, or again in arrangements for string or full orchestra. Harvest Hymn appears in various chamber or orchestral arrangements, while Walking Tune remains in its original wind quintet form. Folk-song arrangements for various groups of instruments, sometimes idiosyncratically described as with elastic scoring, include Early One Morning, Green Bushes, Molly on the Shore, Ye Banks and Braes and Shepherd's Hey. Some of these were also arranged for large wind ensemble. Vocal Music Grainger wrote some original songs and choral music as well as solo and choral arrangements of folk-songs. These include the Irish Tune from County Derry, also arranged for wind band, Brigg Fair for tenor and chorus and The Men of Harlech for double chorus and drums.

Grainger remains controversial on two accounts: firstly, Grainger was an enthusiastic sado-masochist; secondly, he was a cheerful believer in the racial superiority of blond-haired and blue-eyed northern Europeans. This musical curiosity manifested itself in wonderfully realized arrangements of music from cultures that might not otherwise be well known. By utilizing the music of cultures other than his own, Grainger demonstrated an openness and admiration of music of "the other" and in so doing created conditions for greater understanding and respect among societies that might not easily be understood or appreciated. Grainger championed Cyril Scott's Op.66 Piano Sonata for several decades, in concerts from about 1910 to the 1950s. I have not found any reference to the existence of a recording or a tape of Grainger playing this sonata. Does anyone know if such a tape (private or otherwise) might exist? He was concertizing with it in the 1950s, when reel-to-reel tape recorders were around. I wouldn't be surprised if someone has such a tape. I would be very interested in hearing his rendition, since I am releasing my own recording of the work, which has been influenced by Grainger's profusely annotated working copy of it in the Grainger Museum. He studied in Frankfurt before beginning a successful career as a concert pianist in England at the turn of the century. His first compositions were experimental in nature, culminating with Hill Song I in 1902. He subsequently modified his style in the popular British Folk-Music Settings and the Room-Music Tit- Bits.

Contact Details Percy Grainger: A Brief Biographical Background George Percy Grainger was born on 8 July 1882 at Brighton, Victoria. His father, John H. Grainger , was a well-known architect whose designs included the Princes Bridge in Melbourne. Quite precocious, Percy made his first concert tour when he was twelve. Soon afterwards, he went to Germany with his mother Rose to further his training as a pianist and composer. Between 1901 and 1914, Percy and his mother lived in London where his talents flourished. During this time, Colonial Song and Mock Morris were published. In these years he befriended the Norwegian composer, Edvard Grieg, whose love of national music inspired Percy to look closely at English folk music. With the aid of a phonograph, Percy collected songs from folk-singers and made many famous arrangements from these. His friendships with Scandinavian and English musical figures (Herman Sandby, Delius, Cyril Scott , Balfour Gardiner) developed during this period.

Britannica CD Index Articles Dictionary Help Grainger, Percy (Aldridge), original name GEORGE PERCY GRAINGER (b. July 8, 1882, Melbourne, Victoria, Australiad. Feb. 20, 1961, White Plains, N.Y., U.S.), Australian-born American composer, pianist, and conductor who was also known for his work in collecting folk music. Grainger first appeared publicly as a pianist at age 10. He was educated at home in Melbourne by his mother. He studied piano with Louis Pabst in that city and later went to Frankfurt, where he attended the conservatory. He achieved a reputation as a brilliant concert pianist beginning in London in 1901. In 1906 Grainger became a friend of Edvard Grieg , under whose influence he began collecting and recording English folk songs by means of wax-cylinder phonographs. He settled in the United States in 1914, performing for a few years with a U.S. Army band. Grainger was deeply affected by the suicide of his mother in 1922. He returned to Australia alone in 1924 and toured there as a pianist in 1926 and again in 1934-35. In 1932-33 he was head of the music department of New York University. In 1935 he founded the Grainger Museum at Melbourne, a museum of Australian music where much of his own work and some of his artifacts are preserved.
