airdate March 4, 2005 Piano prodigy Lang Lang made musical history by twice stepping in for ailing concert pianists and was hailed as the most exciting keyboard talent in years. Born in China, Lang began piano studies at age 3, made his "professional" debut at 5 and entered a prestigious music conservatory at 9. He came to the U.S. in '97 and has proven to be an artist of maturity beyond his years. On this year's Time 100 list, Lang is also passionate in sharing music with young people and was appointed by UNICEF as their youngest Goodwill Ambassador.
Lang Lang Tavis: Piano prodigy Lang Lang says he wants to do for classical music what Tiger Woods has done for golf, and so far, he's on his way on a good track to do just that. The 22-year-old Chinese native got his first piano before he turned 2. Before he turned 2. And by the time he reached 8, he was studying piano full-time. His latest CD is called 'Rachmaninov.'     Born in Shenyang, China in 1982. He started playing the piano at the tender age of 3. At five years old he gave his first recital. He would later on study at the Central Music Conservatory in Beijing. When he was 13, Lang Lang placed first during the Tchaikovsky International Young Musicians' Competition held in Japan. In 1997, he left for the United States to study at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia where he was offered a scholarship. Once there, he studied under the tutelage of Gary Graffman.

The house, on the corner of Main and Whitstable Streets, was used as a hospital in the 1920s and 30s, and many local residents were born there. Photographed in early 2000, the house was falling into disrepair and was completely destroyed after the fire. It appears that Sister Maude Bray established the hospital in Lang Lang after the First World War. She later married Mr David Harker. Various other nursing sisters ran the hospital over the next twenty years. They included Sister Sanderson, who later became Mrs Greaves, Sister Ross, Sister Lyons, who left in 1923 to become Matron at Inglewood Hospital, and Sister Connors with her daughter Nell. Sister Marion Palmer (later married to Mr Wally Sparrow) relieved at the hospital in the late 1930s. Many local residents were born at the hospital. . Dr Harkness established a surgery in his house in Roseberry St from 1912 until 1915, when he left the district. Lang Lang was without a doctor, but in February 1918 the Lang Lang Guardian reported the arrival of Nurse Rowe, appointed by the Bush Nursing Association. In March she made 88 visits to 27 patients. In the 1920s, the popular Dr Appleford and his wife Sister Alice Appleford came to Lang Lang to provide medical services. Outbreaks of diseases such as diptheria and scarlet fever kept the staff very busy. Sister Appleford was a distinguished nurse who had been awarded the Military medal in the First World War. At Lang Lang she was very active in the Red Cross and Girl Guides and was President of the Mother's Club in the mid 1930s. The four Appleford children attended Lang Lang State School.

    The Manchurian pianist Lang Lang made a remarkable impression on the music world as a potentially great classical pianist before reaching the age of 20. He was born in Shenyang, formerly Mukden, the capital of Manchuria and now the capital of the province of Liaoning. Japan Television . In July 1996 made his New York debut at Steinway Hall , performing the complete Twenty-four Etudes of Chopin. In 1997 he entered the Curtis Institute of Music, where he studied with Gary Graffman.     O ne of the Lang Lang Foundation scholars, Matthias Hegeman (11) has received the Ruhr Award 2008 for his "outstanding talent and achievement". The jury recognized his tenacity and determination in pursuing his artistic goals.     Born in Shenyang, China, Lang Lang (pronounced like Lohng Lohng ), started taking piano lessons when he was just two years old. At fifteen, he moved to America to attend the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. Today he has a #2 album on the Billboard music charts, recently recorded a song for Joan of Arcadia , and is in the middle of a worldwide concert tour. He took time out of his busy schedule to talk to IML about growing up in China, his favorite sport, and why classical music is worth a listen. IML: First things first: What does Lang Lang mean in Chinese?
    Lang Lang: It means “Brilliant Man.” When I was younger, I also had the nickname Liang, which means “bright.” Chinese parents always name their children very cute and positive names. Liang is kind of a play on Lang in Chinese. IML: What is Shenyang like? What was it like to grow up in China?
    Lang Lang: Shenyang is the fifth largest city in China, so it’s very cultured. Our family lived in a two-room apartment in a big building with lots of musicians and actors. It was a very lovely place to live because every family had an instrument and every child studied music. My father played the ehru, which is kind of like a two-stringed violin. But my favorite thing about Shenyang is the food. My favorite dishes are the big dumplings my mom makes and cabbage, which is kind of like sauerkraut, mixed with meat and seafood. I get so hungry just thinking about it!
