Ruth Laredo has achieved a reputation as one of the world's foremost pianist. A native of Detroit, Michigan, she studied with Rudolf Serkin at the Curtis Institute of Music and made her orchestral debut with Leopold Stokowski and the American Symphony Miss Laredo has appeared with most of the major U.S. orchestras including the New York Philharmonic , the Cleveland Orchestra , the Detroit Symphony , the Boston Symphony , the Philadelphia Orchestra and the National Symphony. Following a sensational debut with Boulez and the New York Philharmonic , she received reviews: "Smashing, sensational" (N.Y. Post). "Astonishing" (N.Y. Times), "Total triumph" (Byron Belt). The Newhouse Newspaper raved that she is "one of today"s dream keyboard artists." After a performance by Miss Laredo one reviewer stated, in the Tulsa Daily World, "Not only is she a concert pianist but she can also be said to be one of the few keyboard orchestrators of our time." Miss Laredo is widely recognized for her recordings of the complete Scriabin Sonatas and Preludes, as well as her the "best of the year,"

Died: May 25, 2005 - New York, New York, USA The American pianist, Ruth Meckler Laredo, had early piano studies with her mother. She continued her training with Rudolf Serkin at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, garduating in 1960 with a Bachelor of Music degree.
In 1960 Ruth Laredo married Bolivian violinist Jaime Laredo (the couple was divorced in 1974). During the next several years both musicians made numerous joint appearances throughout the world. In 1962 she made her debut in New York with the American Symphony Orchestra conducted by Leopold Stokowski . Since then she has played all over the USA with many orchestras including the National Symphony, Boston Symphony Orchestra Cleveland Orchestra and the Indianapolis Symphony. She has also played in many foreign countries, giving tours in Japan, Holland, and Germany, among others. She has been a regular participant at the Marlboro Festival in Vermont, collaborating with numerous colleagues in virtually all major chamber works involving the piano.

Ruth Laredo
Laredo has been particularly identified with the music of Sergei Rachmaninoff and Alexander Scriabin. She has recorded the complete solo piano works of Rachmaninoff for Columbia/CBS/Sony. As a result of these recordings, she was commissioned by C. F. Peters to edit an edition of the twenty four Rachmaninoff Preludes. She has also earned a reputation as a specialist in Scriabin, having recorded all ten of his sonatas (for Connoisseur Society) along with other smaller works, and including this music frequently on her recital programs. In addition, Ms. Laredo has made recordings of works by Ravel, Debussy, Barber, Chopin, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky and many other composers. Laredo won several awards throughout her career including a Grammy nomination, and was chosen as one of five pianists to perform at Carnegie Hall for its 90th anniversary celebration. Laredo died on May 25, 2005. She was born June 5, 1939 in Laredo, Texas to parents Shannon Thomas Peterson and Margaret Emily (Ward) Peterson. She was a 1956 graduate of Martin High School in Laredo. Ruth married Marvin Claflin on November 7, 1956 in Laredo. She was a long time racehorse trainer. Ruth enjoyed spending time with her family and working with horses. She is survived by her husband. Marvin Clafin of Bartlett, Texas; son, Marvin Claflin, Jr. and wife Jane of Lake Conroe, Texas; daughter, Heather Holt and husband Tom of Round Rock, Texas; four grandchildren, Shannon and Haley Holt both of Round Rock, Texas, Sarah Page of Cleveland, Texas and Laurie Jo Thompson of Conroe, Texas; and sister, Sharyn Jordan of Laredo, Texas. The family will receive guests for visitation from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. on Monday, June 21, 2004 at Cook-Walden/Davis Funeral Home in Georgetown, Texas. Funeral services will follow at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of Cook-Walden Davis Funeral Home. The family requests memorial contributions may be made to: Texas Horsemen's Assistance Fund, P.O. Box 142533. Austin, Texas 78714.
