The Question About Man
In 195–, living specimens of Paranthropus erectus were discovered in New Guinea. Their almost-human qualities recommended them to Australian industrialists, who announced plans for using them as factory slaves. This aroused Douglas Templemore, a British journalist, who had accompanied the scientific expedition that discovered the Paranthropus. He conceived a dramatic way of determining which these creatures were apes or men in order to decide what action should be taken, if any, to thwart the plans being made for them in Australia. Was the civilized world going to allow the "tropis," as members of the species were affectionately called by the scientists who discovered them, to be unjustly exploited, their rights violated, their dignity transgressed? Or should it acquiesce in their being used, like horses and oxen, as beasts of burden in the service of man? To get a legal decision on these matters by putting the status of the species to the test, Templemore arranged to have a captured female Paranthropus erectus impregnated, by artificial insemination, with his own sperm. He took care of the pregnant tropi, whose name was Derry; and when she gave birth to a male offspring, he brought the mother and "child" back to London, along with thirty other members of the species, for scientific study. While the mother was housed in the Zoo with the other tropis, Templemore kept the little one in his home. To carry out the plan which he had initiated with the artificial insemination of Derry, Templemore, not without anguish, killed his and her offspring with a shot of strychnine chlorhydrate and called in a physician to certify the death.

I am most grateful to John Deely for providing an exception to this rule. I learned three important things from his discussion of The Difference of Man and the Difference It Makes , which appeared in the Spring, 1968, issue of The New Scholasticism (Vol. XLII, pp. 293-306). (1) I learned that I had made a logical mistake in rejecting the argument for the incorporeality of the intellect based on the simultaneous presence of contraries in a single act of the understanding (see Deely, p. 305, fn. 41 (2) I learned that I had overlooked, either from ignorance or inadvertence, a crucial text in Aquinas (much commented on by such contemporary Thomists as Jacques Maritain and Yves Simon) which asserts the immateriality of the quo in sense cognition as well as the immateriality of the quo in intellectual cognition, and which indicates also that the immateriality involved in sense cognition cannot be the same as the immateriality involved in intellectual cognition (see Deely, pp.

THE CRISIS IN CONTEMPORARY EDUCATION
Mortimer J. Adler Published in The Social Frontier , February, 1939, Vol. V, No. 42, pp. 140-145. There is no name readily available for designating the middle position. Traditionalism indicates that tradition, as well as progress and novelty, is a factor in education, but the name itself fails to mention the latter factors. Essentialism apart from its being a barbaric name has been used for a doctrine that does not seem to me an adequate formulation of the moderate policy. For want of a name, therefore, I shall refer to the solution of our difficulties as the Hutchins program. As I understand it, this combines what was vital in classicism formal discipline and tradition with what is sound in progressivism the emphasis upon the present rather than upon the past and the insistence upon activity as indispensable to the learning process. Tradition and invention are the two factors which constitute every living culture: without invention, a culture dies; without tradition, a culture cannot begin to live. So we must have these two factors, in the right proportion and order, in education if the educational process is to preserve and enhance culture. In these terms I shall defend the reforms proposed by President Hutchins. I say "defend" because they have been so widely, so violently, so blindly attacked. Much of the attack has been name-calling and does not deserve serious attention. If the real issues were properly understood, there would be an end to all this nonsense about fascism and authoritarianism, for it would be clear that to ask for discipline in education is not to advocate Prussian drill and the goose step; to ask for the abolition of the elective system is not to desire totalitarian regimentation; to emphasize the rule of reason in human life is not to abridge our liberties. It is only license we retain without the discipline of reason.
