CS: Was ist essentiell bei Mozart?
CS: Auch die meisten Kritiker sind heute mit Rock-Musik aufgewachsen.
MP: Ich weiß. Deshalb hören viele das Subtile nicht und können nur sehr äußerliche Unterschiede wahrnehmen. Dann passiert es, daß sie gelangweilt werden vom vielen Musikhören, und auch von der großen Musik überhaupt. Also verlangen sie danach, immerzu etwas "Neues" zu hören. Und merken dabei nicht, daß diese Sucht nach "Neuem" eine Reaktion auf die Langeweile ist. Auch äußerliche Virtuosität kann so einen substituierenden Effekt haben.
CS: Welchen Stellenwert hat die technische Perfektion?
MP: Vom Pianistischen her können Sie nicht gut genug sein. Nur dann sind Sie frei in der musikalischen Gestaltung. Das Virtuose als Selbstzweck hat mich zwar nie interessiert, aber trotzdem müssen Sie ein echter Virtuose sein, um "zuerst ein Musiker, dann ein Pianist" sein zu können. Ich beschäftige mich viel mit technischen Problemen, aber nicht um der technischen Beherrschung willen. Auch Skalen übe ich nie mechanisch. Wenn einer mechanisch übt, schlägt das sofort aufs Musizieren zurück. Das hört man. Es tötet die unmittelbare, spontane Reaktion ab. Alles muß vom konkreten musikalischen Ziel motiviert sein.

Murray Perahia was born in the Bronx borough of New York City to a family of Sephardi Jewish origin. According to the biography on his Mozart piano sonatas CD, his first language was Ladino . The family came from Thessaloniki . His father moved to the United States in 1935. Perahia began studying the piano at age four with a teacher he says was "very limiting" because she made him play a single piece until it was perfect. He says his musical interests blossomed at age fifteen for reasons he can't explain, and he began to practice seriously. At seventeen, Perahia attended Mannes College , where he studied keyboard, conducting, and composition with his teacher and mentor Mieczysław Horszowski . During the summer, he also attended Marlboro , where he studied with musicians Rudolf Serkin Alexander Schneider , and Pablo Casals , among others. He played duets for piano four hands with Serkin, who later made Perahia his assistant at the

Einem Interview im englischen Spectator vom 11. November 2009 entnimmt der Schreibende, dass Murray Perahia an seiner Schnittverletzung von 1990 an einem Daumen, die sich entzündete und ihn zum zwischenzeitlichen Aufhören zwang, jahrelang litt. Die Antibiotika wirkten nicht. Es dauerte drei Jahre, bis die Hand heilte, und zwar beim Bachstudium in einem Armsessel sitzend. Danach spielte er die Goldberg Variationen ein, die ein Welterfolg wurden. Hin und wieder flackert die Verletzung wieder auf, so 2008, als er deswegen einige Konzert seiner erfolgreichen Tournee annullieren musste.

Biographie
Murray Perahia ist ein Amerikaner sephardischer (spanisch-jüdischer) Abstammung, der heute in London lebt. Er wurde 1947 in New York geboren. Mit 3 brachten ihm seine Eltern das Klavierspiel bei. Ab 1952 unterrichtete ihn zwölf Jahre lang Jeanette Haien, die Assistentin von Abran Chasins. Daneben besuchte er die Musikstunden an der High School of Performing Art.
Mit 17 wechselte Murray Perahia als Student an das New Yorker Mannes College of Music, wo er nicht nur sein Klavierspiel weiter voranbrachte, sondern auch in Komposition und Orchesterleitung bei Carl Bamberger abschloss. Daneben nahm er Privatstunden bei den Pianisten Mieczyslaw Horszowski und Artur Balsam. In jener Zeit hörte Perahia vor allem Aufnahmen von Horowitz, Clifford Curzon, Schnabel sowie von seinem Lehrer Horszowski.

Für seine besondere musikalische Sensibilität bekannt, ist Murray Perahia regelmäßig in allen musikalischen Zentren der Welt zu Gast und spielt mit den führenden internationalen Orchestern. Derzeit ist Murray Perahia auch erster Gastdirigent der Academy of St Martin in the Fields, mit welcher er als Pianist und Dirigent in den USA, Europa, Japan und in Südostasien auf Tournee gewesen ist. Auch in der Saison 2009/10 wird er mit der Academy of St Martin in the Fields auf Tour gehen und weltweit mehrere Rezitale spielen. Als Exklusivkünstler von Sony Classical/Sony BMG Masterworks kann Murray Perahia auf eine umfassende Diskographie verweisen. Für seine Einspielung der Chopin Etüden op. 10 und op. 25 gewann er 2003 den Grammy in der Kategorie Best Instrumental Soloist Performance. Auch seine weiteren Einspielungen sind stets mit höchstem Lob bedacht worden. Zu erwähnen sind insbesondere die Gesamtaufnahme der Mozartkonzerte mit dem English Chamber Orchestra, Beethovens Klaviersonaten op. 14, 26 und 28 und die Gesamtaufnahme der Beethovenkonzerte mit dem Concertgebouw Orkest Amsterdam unter Bernard Haitink. Eine Gesamtaufnahme der Konzerte von Bach liegt mit der Academy of St Martin in the Fields vor. Mit dem Erscheinen der Partiten Nr. 1, 5 und 6 komplettierte er im September 2009 die Aufnahme aller Bach Partiten.

In 1972, he won the 4 th Leeds Piano Competition, helping to cement its reputation for advancing the careers of young pianistic talent. Dr. Fanny Waterman recalls anecdotally (in Wendy Thompson's book Piano Competition: The Story of the Leeds ) that Mieczyslaw Horszowski had phoned her prior to the competition, announcing that he would enter the winner. Other American contestants had apparently withdrawn their applications upon hearing that Perahia would be competing.
