SERGEY VASIL'YEVICH RACHMANINOV It is tempting to explain Sergey Vasil'yevich Rachmaninov's lifelong outward stoicism, the icy demeanor he always exhibited when performing, as a protective mechanism acquired slowly and painfully in his youth, when one difficulty after another presented itself to a sensitive, naturally withdrawn young man who was nevertheless determined to make his way in the world as a musician. He had little help from his parents. His father squandered the famiIy fortune so quickly that Sergey was only nine years old when he saw the estate at Novgorod where they had lived, the last of their property, auctioned off to pay debts.
The family moved to St. Petersburg and Rachmaninov continued his piano studies at the Conservatory. But soon, when a diphtheria epidemic swept the city, his sister Sofiya died. Not long after that his parents separated. Young Sergey reacted by failing all his final examinations at school (he was then twelve). As a consequence the promising pianist was shipped off to Moscow, where he would live and study with the strict disciplinarian Nikolay Zverev. Life with Zverev was no picnic: the day began at 6:00 a.m. and included a stiff regimen of communal practice, group and private instruction and attendance at various concerts in the city. In a while, Rachmaninov was able to transfer to the senior division of the Moscow Conservatory, taking more of his classes outside the Zverev household. But when, in order to compose without the constant distraction of his housemates' practice, he asked for a private room, Zverev obliged by kicking him out. They did not exchange words for three years.

Sergei Rachmaninov
Sergei Rachmaninov , also Sergey Rachmaninov or Sergei Rachmaninoff April 1 March 28 ) was a Russian composer pianist and conductor Born in Semyonovo, near Novgorod into a wealthy family with a strong military background, Rachmaninov had his first piano lessons with his mother at the family estate at Oneg. After a decline in their fortunes, the family moved to Saint Petersburg where Rachmaninov studied at the conservatory , before going on to Moscow , where he studied piano with Nikolay Zverev and Alexander Siloti. He also studied harmony with Anton Arensky and counterpoint with Sergei Taneyev. While still a student he wrote this one act opera Aleko , and the set of piano pieces, Op. 3, which contains the Prelude in C sharp minor, probably Rachmaninov's most popular piece for solo piano. Rachmaninov's first symphony was premiered in 1897, but was a complete flop with the critics. Some have suggested that this was as much due to the conducting of Alexander Glazunov , who may have been drunk, as it was to Rachmaninov. The bad reception led to a nervous breakdown and complete loss of self-confidence for Rachmaninov. He wrote very little music until he began a course of therapy with Nikolai Dahl. The result of these sessions was the Piano Concerto No. 2, which Rachmaninov dedicated to Dahl. The piece was very well received at its premiere, for which Rachmaninov played the solo part himself, and remains one of his most popular compositions, gaining some fame from its use in the

    Rachmaninoff, Sergei Vasilyevich
Rachmaninoff, Sergei Vasilyevich u key As a composer he was strongly influenced by his friend Tchaikovsky . Rachmaninoff's music, particularly his piano compositions, are characterized by their dark and massive chords, whose dramatic effects and strong melodic lines have made them enormously popular. His best-known works are the second (1901) of his four piano concertos, and the Prelude in C Sharp Minor (1892), for piano. Other compositions include Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini (1934), for piano and orchestra; an orchestral tone poem, The Isle of the Dead The Bells (1913), for chorus and orchestra; three symphonies; two sacred choral works, Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom (1910) and Vespers (1915); and many piano pieces and songs.

Rachmaninov Sergei - The Very Best Of (2005)
Review: I'm not really reviewing Rachmaninov... I think the titles of the music listed speak for themselves if you know any Rachmaninov. If you don't know any Rachmaninov, I'd suggest you do so pretty quick.
Anyway, I got my CD in the mail promptly, but it was buggy. It comes in two CDs... first problem came when trying to copy the music to my computer; the names and data of each song are not loaded onto my CD properly... all the song names on the second disk were the the same as the first, so my computer just overwrote them if that makes any sense, so I had a jumble of pieces and had to end up recopying, etc., yada yada.
Second problem is that on some tracks the piece would stop in the middle, unfinished, and go on to the next track. For example, it would be listed as being 4:45 minutes long, but would stop at say, 2:24 in mid-piece and go onto the next track. Bummer.
But I don't really know much about CDs, it could just be my copy, who knows. Other than that, what I did get is gorgeous.
