Introduction Cantatas Other Vocal Instrumental ... Links Short Biographies A B C D ... Acronyms Rudolf Serkin (Piano) Born: March 28, 1903 - Eger, Bohemia (now Cheb, Czech Republic)
Died: May 8, 1991 - Guilford, Vermount, USA The Austrian-born American pianist and pedagogue, Rudolf Serkin, was born to a Jewish Russian family. The family moved to Vienna when Serkin was nine, where he studied piano with Richard Robert and composition with Joseph Marx and Arnold Schoenberg . Rudolf was hailed as a child prodigy, and he made his public debut with Oskar Nedbal and the Wiener Symphoniker at 12.
Rudolf Serkin began a regular concert career in 1920, living in Berlin with violinist Adolf Busch and his family, which included the then three-year-old daughter Irene whom Serkin would marry 15 years later (1945). Throughout the 1920's and early 1930's, Serkin performed throughout Europe both as soloist and with Busch Chamber Orchestra and the Busch Quartet, and in joint recitals with Adolf Busch. With the rise of Hitler in Germany, Serkin and the Busches left Germany first for Vienna, and then after the Anschluss, for Switzerland.
In 1933 Rudolf Serkin made his first USA appearance at the Coolidge Festival in Washington, D.C. In February 1936, he launched his solo concert career in the USA with the

(b. March 28, 1903, Eger, Bohemia, Austria-Hungary [now Cheb, Czech Republic]d. May 8, 1991, Guilford, Vt., U.S.), Austrian-born American pianist and teacher who concentrated on the music of J.S. Bach, W.A. Mozart, Ludwig van Beethoven, Franz Schubert, and Johannes Brahms. A student of Richard Robert (piano) and of Joseph Marx and Arnold Schoenberg (composition), Serkin made his debut with the Vienna Symphony Orchestra at the age of 12. Following important performances in Berlin with the Busch Chamber Orchestra, he settled in Basel in 1926. In 1933 he gave his first American performance, and he moved to the United States permanently in 1939. He became known for his chamber music performances, which began during his association with Adolf Busch in the 1920s. His playing was characterized by faithfulness to the text and classical clarity. Serkin served on the piano faculty of the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia from 1939 to 1975, and in 1949 he helped found the Marlboro Festival in Vermont. Serkin's son Peter (1947- ) also became a successful concert pianist. Related Propaedia Topics: Recording and reproduction of music

Rudolf Serkin. To name one single pianist who combined the extremities of intuition and intellect, I would choose Rudolf Serkin. His playing has nothing attractive.
http://home.netvigator.com/~joelamkt/serkin.html
Rudolf Serkin
When he played, Serkin was always restless and totally absorbed. If he were possessed, it would be by the soul of the composer. He was so determined to play as fast as he could as if he feared he had not enough time to speak all his words. As in his classic recording of the Brahms Piano Concerto No.1 with George Szell, the first movement was taken at a nearly impossible speed. But the urgency is telling. The articulation and the stunning double notes were done so immaculately. His a bit awkward techique was afterall pretty remarkable. Perhaps, his negligence of surface decoration allowed his full attention to be given to throwing out what was in his heart. The second movement was filled with a trully romantic ardor, though as expected of Serkin, the sound is a bit dry. He never trully played 'softly'. He wanted every note to register its presence. He understood each one of them as a friend and he did not smooth them out. Recently, Sony has reissued his unreleased recordings of nine Beethoven sonatas(SM3K 64490). They include the last three masterpieces. Those last works of Beethoven are real gems and in them Serkin threw off his best. Toward the end of his career, his repertoire narrowed to only Beethoven, Mozart and Schubert. Sometimes music lovers find his playing 'almost too serious'; but no one should regret for his growth in wisdom and revelation. At his 80th Birthday, he played the last three Beethoven sonatas in Vienna. The performance showed his age and mortality. But the spirit of the performance is immortal. The white-hot concentration was the result of single-minded dedication and absorption in the world of Beethoven. As with his Mozart's concertos recorded about this time, they may not be the 'standard recommendation' in the 'standard' CD guides. But what they offer is a unique personality : a wise and passionate pianist who never pretended.

SERKIN, RUDOLF (1903 - 1991)
Apart from his commitments at Curtis and Marlboro, Serkin continued to give many concerts throughout the world, touring Europe and North America every year. At his final Carnegie Hall recital in 1987 when he was eighty-four years old, Serkin played the last three sonatas by Beethoven. As well as attaining a successful life as a pianist and chamber musician, Serkin left a valuable legacy in the Marlboro Festival in Vermont and in his achievement, with Busch, of putting violinist and pianist on an equal standing in performance.
