1. Syme, David

Syme, David Age newspaper. The paper was then threatened with failure, and Syme who had saved some money while on the diggings joined his brother in buying it for the sum of £2000. The paper struggled on for 18 months, when finding it could not support the two proprietors David obtained other employment. He became a contractor and in spite of strong competition was successful. In March 1860 his brother Ebenezer died, and finding it was difficult to sell the Age Syme decided to abandon his contracting and carry on the paper. The task undertaken was one of great difficulty, and only the fact that the proprietor was willing to work 15 hours a day made success possible. The original policy of the Age included manhood suffrage, the opening of the lands for selection by the people, no compensation for the squatters, and compulsory, free and secular education. When protection was added to the programme great opposition was raised. It was felt quite honestly by the conservative and moneyed classes that if these things came about the colony would be in great danger. The opposition to the Age was carried even to the extent of boycotting its advertisement columns. But great as his difficulties were Syme was undismayed. Various abortive amending land acts became law between 1860 and 1869, but in the latter year an act was passed which embodied most of the principles for which Syme had fought. It was now possible for the land to be properly cultivated and a great principle had been established. A tremendous flow of population came into Victoria between 1850 and 1860 and towards the end of the decade there was some unemployment. Syme felt that manufacturing industries should be established and that this could only be done by bringing in protection. He won over to his side able men like Sir James McCulloch (q.v.) and Sir Graham Berry (q.v.), protection became the settled policy of the colony, and many manufacturies were established. But the account in Pratt's

NOTABLE DATES A group of people, all with an interest in painting, met and decided to form an Art Club. Some of those were John Syme, David Reid, Bob Morris, Gordon Munro and Jean Steel. Cupar Art Club was formed and the artists met in an old byre at 16 Bobber Wynd off the Crossgate Cupar. David Reid was the President of the Club. The Club moved to newly renovated premises in the old Castlehill School. Fife Council offered this accommodation to various societies and clubs that met in Cupar. The Art Club took over the first floor in the Theatre Block at Castlehill. David Reid, the President of the Club for 22 years, passed away. Edna Gray, who had been the Secretary of the Club for many years, became President. The Area Social Work Department took over the main building (including the hall, which had been used for the annual exhibition) but Cupar Art Club continued to meet in the Theatre Block. As the hall was no longer available the exhibition was moved to the Corn Exchange. Isabel Copland (who had been Vice-President for 4 years) became President and held the post until 2005.

Born

North Berwick, Scotland
Died

Kew, Victoria, Australia
Occupation
Newspaper proprietor
David Syme left Scotland after the death of his father. After a time studying in Germany, in 1851 Syme went to California via Cape Horn on an unsuccessful gold seeking mission. By mid-1852 David Syme was in Melbourne, and in the next three years prospected with some success on the Ballarat, Bendigo, Castlemaine and Beechworth diggings. In 1855 he lost a possible fortune at Egerton, near Ballarat, when a promising claim was jumped. Syme then abandoned gold seeking and embarked on a career of road contracting. In 1856 he was encouraged to take a half-share in the Melbourne Age The Age , and upon Ebenezer’s death in 1860, began a 50 year career as the newspaper’s publisher and editor. Cate Elkner

Introduction
The history of The Age is that of a worthy newspaper passing out of family control through generational change (lost within the customary three generations) and failure to strengthen its financial base through diversification (eg into television and minor papers) and reinvestment of profits.
Early history
The Age was founded in 1854 by retailers John and Henry Cooke as a competitor to the Melbourne Argus but failed twice in the next two years. In 1856 it was acquired for £2,000 by Ebenezer Syme (1826-1860) and his brother David (1827-1908), a gold-prospector and road-building contractor. Each acquired 50% of the paper with support from associates such as retailer James McEwan. The brothers were the offspring of Scots cleric George Alexander Syme. Ebenezer had earlier been associated with Chapman's Westminister Review in London and with Joseph Henry Abbott (1830-1904) and miners' leader George Thomson (1826-1889) had founded the Bendigo Diggers Advocate. Ebeneezer (a former Cooke employee) served as editor of The Age until his death in 1860. David Syme then became the major owner, running the paper until his own death in 1908. He bought out Ebenezer's heirs in 1891. Brother George Alexander Syme (1822-1894) - father of noted surgeon George Syme (1859-1929) - served as editor of The Age and Leader but had no major economic interest in the papers.

There is a complementary profile on the Rural Press group, acquired through a friendly takeover in December 2006.
Introduction
At its height the Fairfax empire encompassed television and radio stations in Australia , magazines (including the UK Spectator), rural and suburban newspapers, Australia's major financial newspaper (Australian Financial Review) and broadsheets (Sydney Morning Herald and Melbourne Age). It was dismembered last decade after Warwick Fairfax took on too much debt—what's an extra hundred million or so—in buying out family members and the public. Rival publishers such as Packer and Black have bought and then sold stakes; what's left of the empire is now owned by the usual fund managers and small investors rather than people with ink in their blood. Amid recurrent speculation of a bid by O'Reilly family interests in April 2003 Fairfax announced a $1 billion deal to acquire most of the publishing interests of New Zealand 's Independent Newspapers Ltd (INL), at that time around 50% owned by News.
