Extractions: From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search Claudio Arrau Claudio Arrau León Chilean pianist known for his interpretations of a vast repertoire spanning from the baroque to 20th-century composers, especially Beethoven, Schubert, Chopin, Schumann, Liszt, Brahms and Debussy. He is widely considered one of the greatest pianists of the twentieth century. Arrau was born in Chillán Chile , the son of Carlos Arrau, an ophthalmologist who died when Claudio was only a year old, and Lucrecia León Bravo de Villalba, a piano teacher. He belonged to an old, prominent family of Southern Chile. His ancestor Lorenzo de Arrau , a Spanish engineer, was sent to Chile by King Carlos III of Spain . Through his great-grandmother, María del Carmen Daroch del Solar, Arrau was a descendant of the Campbells of Glenorchy, a Scottish noble family. citation needed Arrau was a child prodigy , giving his first concert at age five. In a career that spanned eight decades, Arrau was prized for an aristocratic approach to the great works of the 19th century. He showed his musical abilities early. His dad, Carlos Arrau, died before he was a year old and his mom supported the family by giving music lessons. When he was four, he startled his mom by playing from memory some of the pieces her students were learning. A child prodigy, he gave his first concert at five and began international tours at nine, in 1912. He made his Berlin debut in 1914 and toured Europe in 1918. In 1927, he won the Grand Prix Internationale des Pianistes, in Geneva. He moved to the U.S. in 1941, performing in the U.S. and abroad, winning many international awards. He later resided in Germany, which claimed his mind and his intellect , though his heart always remained loyal to Chile.

He studied piano at the Milan Conservatory with his father Michelangelo Abbado, and went on to study conducting with Hans Swarowsky at the Vienna Academy of Music. In 1958, he won the Koussevitsky Competition, establishing him in Italy, and then won the 1963 Mitropoulos Prize, after which he rapidly became known internationally as an orchestral and opera conductor. Abbado made his debut at La Scala in his Milan in 1960. He served as its music director from 1968 to 1986, conducting not only the traditional Italian repertoire but also presenting a contemporary opera each year, as well as a concert series devoted to the works of Berg and Mussorgsky . While at La Scala, Abbado also founded the Orchestra della Scala, for the performance of orchestral repertoire in concert.

In 1911 he was sponsored by the Chilean government to study with Martin Krause in Berlin, where his talent attracted attention. Returning to Chile in 1921, Arrau began making his first professional appearances, which eventually led to concerts around the world. Between 1935 and 1936, in Berlin, he presented the complete keyboard works of Bach and Mozart.
