He has been the Principal Flautist of many orchestras, including the Toronto Philharmonia, the Slovak Philharmonic and Broadcasting Orchestras in the Slovak Republic. Brunner has performed, as Principal Flautist, at summer festivals in both the United States and Europe, and has made solo performances with the Kosice Philharmonic, the Liverpool Symphony and Musica Antiqua, to name a few. In addition to his busy touring schedule, Brunner currently teaches at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto, Ontario. He was an estimable composer of serious inclination, fluent articulation and profusely productive (there are more than 24 symphonies and at least seven piano concertos). It is regrettable that his music never travelled much beyond the bounds of his native Denmark. Ole Schmidt conducted his symphonies 3 (24 August 1979), 4 (15 April 1981) and 5 (30 August 1979) with, respectively the BBCSO, BBC Scottish and BBC Northern. Otherwise you may well know him only from the Turnabout LP of his Symphonic Variations Anker Blyme gives signs of being an authoritative interpreter. He has worked with Bentzon on many occasions and recorded Bentzon's two piano music with the composer. Blyme has also recorded four of the seven piano concertos. Bentzon was himself a pianistic of great technical and artistic resource and perception. B Niels Viggo Bentzon was a whirlwind in post-war Danish music, constantly creating and exploring every musical genre, and with an output that over the years simply grew and grew. Bentzon has passed his opus number 650. Of this gigantic number of works, 22 are symphonies. As a self-taught composer Bentzon broke with the dominant, mild Danish Modernism of the day and plunged into far more uninhibited music. With great expressive power, he blasted his way to a renewal of Danish Modernism. At an early stage he was influenced by Hindemith, and later also by Schönberg, but it was with an organic "metamorphosis technique" that he made his great impact around 1950. In the 1960s Bentzon also threw himself into trail-blazing experiments with jazz, pop and happenings (with a great innate talent for humour). Since then his music has been strongly characterized by improvisation and eclecticism. It must be said in fact that very few people have a good general idea of Niels Viggo Bentzon's huge artistic output. For obvious reasons, an oeuvre as large as Bentzon's will be somewhat patchy, but even this aspect of Bentzon's art looks like a deliberate provocation.

Today Bentzon enjoys the status of a kind of cultural phenomenon, thanks not only to his great artistic impact but also to his strong commitment in writing and speech to the ongoing aesthetic discussions of the latter half of the last century. Niels Viggo Bentzon was practically born into music – he was the first generation of a ‘merger’ of two of Denmark’s greatest musical families – Hartmann and Bentzon. Against this background it seemed only natural that his musical tutoring at the piano by his mother resulted in his studying piano, theory and organ at the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen.
