It is an elegant and fun short piece that features a great partnership between the violin and piano. Although the piece may sound simple when you listen to it, when playing it you may discover it is not as simple as it sounds. Any theme with variation has the initial challenge of making each variation interesting. In addition to this, there are syncopated rhythms throughout the piece, several double-stops, and artificial harmonics in the violin part. I highly recommend this piece for any violinist who needs a short piece for a recital or wants to have an enjoyable collaboration with their pianist." - Alexandra Ostroff, Violinist, 2008 Shar Apprentice

Making use of William Blake's poetry for the vocal parts, this is quite a piece of music, particularly to the ears of a classical and baroque enthusiast like yours truly. Thoroughly modern in approach, it spans a musical range that bounces back and forth between traditional styles, modern dissonance, and folk, rock, and even reggae, to, as a note on the back of the CD box states, "encompass the breadth of the Blakean spiritual universe."

Extractions: Britannica CD Index Articles Dictionary Help in full WILLIAM ELDEN BOLCOM (b. May 26, 1938, Seattle, Wash., U.S.), American composer, pianist, and teacher whose compositions encompass many idioms, from popular cabaret songs to more traditional classical scores. Bolcom graduated from the University of Washington in 1958 and studied composition with Darius Milhaud at Mills College (1958-61) and with Milhaud and Olivier Messiaen at the Paris Conservatory. After continuing his studies at Stanford University (D.M.A., 1964), he taught or was composer-in-residence at a number of schools before accepting a position at the University of Michigan (from 1973). Throughout these years Bolcom developed his compositional abilities, attempting to break down what he saw as the artificial barriers between popular and "serious" music. He produced compositions of great diversity, including Dynamite Tonight (1963), a "cabaret opera"; 12 Etudes for piano (1959-66); Open House (1975), a song cycle based on poems by Theodore Roethke; Graceful Ghost Rag (1971), one of several ragtime compositions; and the much-acclaimed, William Blake-inspired
