He first worked professionally as a pianist in a cinema in Glasgow, Scotland, and made his first broadcast in 1932. He moved to London, England, in 1935 to play in Teddy Joyce's band, and began playing with American saxophone players Benny Carter and Coleman Hawkins. He began to gain a strong reputation in Europe from 1947, and by 1953 had made his debut in the US. He started a series of recordings in the UK in the late 1950s. He gave up playing concerts in 1974, returning to a professional role at the San Pietro Majella Conservatory.
