L > Lang Lang E-MAIL The story of the pianist Lang Lang begins with his parents and their obsessive dreams for him. When his mother was pregnant, she listened to countless hours of Western classical music a rare practice in China hoping to transmit the rhythms to the fetus. Before he turned 2, his mother and father spent half of their yearly income to buy him a piano. ''I have wanted Lang Lang to go beyond the boundaries of Asia and enter the global stage as an artist since he was a little boy,'' said his father, Guoren Lang. Today Mr. Lang is a superstar, playing piano on television for the 2008 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, appearing in concerts throughout the United States, and, of course, having People magazine name him one of the year's sexiest men. Mr. Lang was born in 1982 in Shenyang, a city in northeastern China, to a professional musician and a telephone technician. It was just two years after China's ''one child policy.'' Guoren Lang named his newborn, which means the brilliance of the sky. The decision that changed Mr. Lang's life came when he was 9 when he was admitted by the Central Music Conservatory in Beijing, a 12-hour train ride from home. Because one parent would have to live with him, his father quit his job and they moved to Beijing.

Extractions: In this age of hyperbole, wunderkind is an overused word. Yet, there is no denying that the musical world is full of them. If anyone qualifies for that elite group, pianist Lang Lang certainly does. Born in 1982 in Shenyang, China, Lang Lang was a serious piano student at three, won first prize in a local competition and made his 'professional' debut at five, entered the prestigious Beijing Central Music Conservatory at nine, and won first prizes in young pianist competitions in Germany and Japan when he was all of fifteen. He graduated from the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia, where he studied under Gary Graffman. H is career breakthrough came in 1999, when he replaced an ailing Andr Watts at the Ravinia Festival. Critics and the public were falling over themselves with words of praise: 'stunning", "brilliant", "this is a talent in a million". Since then, his career trajectory has been nothing short of meteoric. Now an exclusive Deutsche Grammophon artist, his debut recording of Tchaikovsky and Mendelssohn piano concerti has garnered much media attention. His Carnegie Hall recital debut last November was taped by DG for issue in March. The concert itself drew polarized opinions: some found him too flamboyant and eccentric for his own good, while others, arguably the majority in attendance, were dazzled and couldn't get enough. One thing is certain his is a prodigious talent.
