At the age of five, he got the first prize of the Children's Accordion Competition. When he was seven, his interest turned to piano and later became a student of Professor Dan Zhaoyi, a famous pianist. With his first prize won in Chongqing Piano Competition in 1993, he was accepted by the middle school attached to the Sichuan Music College. In 1995, Li, a 12-year-old boy, took part in the Stravensky International Piano Competition, the first one of such big contests, and won the third prize of Group B, which had 70 contestants. From then on, Li have received countless prizes with his elegant piano performance, such as the third prize of Piano Competition on Chinese Music Works held in Hong Kong in 1997, and the third prize of International Piano Competition in South Missouri, held in the US in 1998, and so on. In October 2000, Li was picked out by Chinese Ministry of Culture to take part in the 14
Extractions: End Date: About Li Yundi (Chinese: 李云迪, pinyin: Lǐ Yúndí) (born October 7, 1982) is a classical pianist. He is also popularly known as Yundi Li . Born in Chongqing, China, Li is most well known for being the youngest pianist to win the International Frédéric Chopin Piano Competition at the age of eighteen years in the year 2000. Li now resides in Hong Kong. His father, Li Chuan, and his mother, Zhang Xiaolu, both worked for the Sichuan Chongqing Steel and Iron Company. Although coming from a family of non-musicians, Li Yundi took to music early. When he was three years old, his parents bought him an accordion after he was so entranced by an accordion player in a shopping mall that he refused to leave. In 1995, he was awarded first place at the Stravinsky International Youth Competition. In 1998, he won the 1998 Missouri Southern International Piano Competition (Junior Division). The next year, he took Third Prize at the International Franz Liszt Piano Competition of Utrecht, as well as being a major winner in the China International Piano Competition.
