Imagine yourself neck deep in mud. Now imagine yourself surrounded by poisonous snakes and some really nice sized alligators. Add to that the fact that you are working seven days a week from daylight until dark and sleeping every night on an air mattress thrown on a steel deck barge. If that’s not fun enough, picture that you are sharing one restroom, one shower and spending all your time 24 hours a day, for five months, with your fellow co-workers (You really start to notice each others bad habits.) These are just a few of the challenging conditions facing the Memphis District employees from Revetment Section who are working on the Buffalo Cove project just off the Atchafalaya River in south-central Louisiana. As we begin 2009, let’s take a look back at the old year and remember where we’ve been. In January we began work on a major reconnaissance study of the lower Mississippi River. Titled the Lower Mississippi River Resource Assessment (LMRRA), up to half a million dollars in Federal funds may be used to work in cooperation with Federal resource agencies and states that border the river. Two efforts under the Continuing Authorities Program (CAP) were on the move in the Memphis District – one in nearby Germantown, Tenn., and the other in Mayfield, Ky., near Paducah. In an effort to improve labor-management relations, Memphis District managers and officers from the IFPTE (International Federation of Technical and Professional Engineers) Local 259 convened their first Partnership Council meeting.

Almost all know that the county was initially populated by the Land Run of April 22, 1889, but not as many are familiar with the fact that our eastern 144 square miles were not included in that 1889 Land Run at all. This article's purpose is to present, by maps and additional information, how Oklahoma County came to be the county that we know today and a little about its changes from the 1889 Land Run through the end of the nineteenth century, focusing on the towns that did not last to or much beyond 1900. A BEGINNING WORD OF CAUTION ABOUT VINTAGE MAPS. One of the funnest things to do when sniffing around internet websites is to locate really cool maps (e.g., the Library of Congress vintage maps collection or the University of Alabama's similar collection ) at least, I find a good bit of pleasure in the hunt and then publishing them here in Doug Dawgz Blog. I make this note for those similarly inclined or for others who don't care for the hunt but just like to see really old maps from time to time.
