As an adult, he was an alcoholic, addicted to paid sex and afraid to perform in public on the piano. His career foundered, despite champions as diverse as Bela Lugosi and Arnold Schoenberg, and he spent decades living in poverty, mostly in a succession of cheap hotel rooms in California, even after his rediscovery and a brief period of international celebrity in the 1970s. Extractions: The Irwin Nyiregyhazi Appreciation Page He was a child musical prodigy whose talents were compared to those of Mozart and Saint-Saens ... Sometimes he lived in flophouses and slept on subways ... He was a celebrated pianist whom some called "the reincarnation of Liszt" ... He gave only a handful of concerts in the last 60 years of his life ... Society prized him, but he played for gangsters and the motion pictures ... The aim of this site is to supplement the pioneering work of Aaron Gross's Nyiregyhazi web site and to provide an information resource on this extraordinary man. Offered below are some MIDI files. First are transcriptions by Michael Brown of several compositions of the very young Nyiregyhazi. These compositions were published in a pioneering psychomusical study of the abilities of the young prodigy. To my knowledge they have not been republished or transcribed elsewhere. Second are MIDI-files from scans of Nyiregyhazi's reproducing piano rolls for the Ampico system, recorded in the later 1920s.
