Our projects Pletnev Mikhail Mikhail Pletnev One of today’s truly gifted and driven musicians, Mikhail Pletnev combines his remarkable talents as a pianist, conductor, and composer. Perhaps destined to be an artist, he was born into a family of musicians in Arkhangelsk. The musician’s dream of creating an independent symphony orchestra was realized in 1990. Thanks to his prestige as a musician, a fair number of talented instrumentalists joined the orchestra from the onset.From the time the Russian National Orchestra was founded and until 1999, Pletnev has been the orchestra’s artistic director, principal conductor, and president of the orchestra’s foundation. The ensemble has given a slew of concerts across its native land: in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Samara, Togliatti, and other cities along the coast of the Volga river, as well as Voronezh and Vologda.It has also notably taken part in multiple Russian music festivals. Aside from that, the orchestra has enjoyed triumphal tours of the U. S., Japan, Southeast Asia, and has played Europe’s biggest venues. Pletnev has taken his orchestra straight to the top, placing it among the world’s best symphony ensembles. The Russian National Orchestra has opened truly limitless opportunities for Pletnev as conductor, allowing his talent to flourish to the fullest extent. The Maestro Pletnev is often invited to be guest conductor by many outstanding orchestras throughout the world: the Los Angeles, London, Rotterdam philharmonic orchestras, the Royal Scottish National and the Scottish Chamber orchestras, among others.

At the keyboard and podium alike, Pletnev is recognized as one of the finest artists of our time. Pletnev was Gold Medal and First Prize winner of the 1978 Tchaikovsky International Piano Competition when he was only 21, a prize that earned him early recognition worldwide. An invitation to perform at the 1988 superpower summit in Washington led to a friendship with Mikhail Gorbachev and the historic opportunity to make music in artistic freedom. In 1990 Pletnev formed the first independent orchestra in Russia's history. The risks of this step, even with Gorbachev's endorsement, were enormous and it was Pletnev's reputation and commitment that made his long-held dream a reality. Sharing his vision for a new model for the performing arts, many of the country's finest musicians joined Pletnev in launching the Russian National Orchestra. Under his leadership, the RNO achieved in a few short years a towering stature among the world's orchestras. Pletnev describes the RNO as his greatest joy and today serves as its Artistic Director and Principal Conductor. In 2006, he launched the Mikhail Pletnev Fund for the Support of National Culture, a non-profit organization that supports major cultural initiatives and projects, including the RNO's annual Volga Tour and, in collaboration with Deutsche Grammophon, the Mikhail Pletnev Beethoven Project.
