Donal Henehan of the New York Times wrote in his review, Mr. Serkin also was the soloist on this occasion for the New York premiere and gave a remarkably fluent but self-effacing performance. Because of his pianistic command and the Boston Symphony's assured accompaniment under Seiji Ozawa, it was possible to listen past the instruments to the concerto's message, which turned out to be rather garbled. However, the soloist's interpretation had to be considered sympathetic, if not definitive: composer and pianist are old friends who are known to share an interest in Buddhism as well as in musical outlook Obviously, based upon the photograph, Mr. Serkin put himself into the work. Peter Serkin, a pupil of his Father, Horszowski, Luvisi, Oster, Moyse and Karl Ulrich Schnabel made his debut at the age of 12 in 1959. He earned his first Grammy at the age of 19 and after a period of soul searching has become one of the most reliable, sensitive and thoughtful concert pianists on the stage today. He has also been a great champion of 20th Century piano works. He gave the World premiere the Lieberson Concerto in Boston several months before the New York Premiere.
